The Inner Child

Inner Child Therapy is about finding the child within yourself and learning to be a parent to that child. Healing your inner child can help you to learn, understand and love yourself, reach acceptance and overcome fears and obstacles.

It is not easy to get in touch with your inner child, but once you are able to achieve this, it can be a little frightening, overwhelming, but at the same time allow you to reach huge realizations.

When you are younger, any abuse, trauma, fear more often than not gets pushed away into corners of your mind, almost like secret places and as we grow into an adult, we find healthy or unhealthy coping mechanisms to block the memories.

Meeting your inner child can be traumatic at first, as we have to deal with all the distress that was locked away with it. In order to meet your inner child you need to be ready to bring back all the distress and face it. This should be done through a professional, a psychologist that is trained in Inner Child Therapy, who can gently prepare you for meeting your inner child and deal with what comes up and work through it.

It is not a quick process and requires a lot of hard work, but once through it, there is an amazing difference in your life.

My personal experience with my Inner Child was done through a clinical psychologist.

At first I was given a trauma egg to complete with her, which took a few sessions.

The egg is has to be filled with little bubbles from the bottom to the top, each bubble representing trauma’s from birth. Anything that you consider is a trauma.

Then one by one, the therapist works through each trauma, once all the trauma’s are worked through, you make 2 lists, one on the left of the egg and one on the right of the egg.

The left is all the negative aspects of your life and family

The right is all the positives of your life and your family

They are then linked together by the therapist and basically cancel each other out.

So the negativity disappears.

Hypnotherapy is also a way to reach your inner child.

Another way to reach your inner child is through dreams, as your inner child comes out in your dreams. If you remember your dreams, it is a good idea to journal them and discuss them with your psychologist.

I met my inner child in a dream and she was paralyzed with fear and it took me a while in my dream, to take her hand and lead her, through passageways and out a door.

I then had a series of dreams, soothing my inner child and helping her face fears and overcoming obstacles. All the dreams where discussed in therapy and eventually my Inner child was fully healed. No fear, no worry and I was confident.

Thoughts that may be irrational that pop into your head, can very often be your inner child trying to get your attention. Through therapy you can learn to listen to what your inner child is saying and deal with what they need, becoming a good parent to your inner child and empowering yourself with a deep understanding of who you are.

It is truly an empowering experience and has the ability to change your perceptions, thought patterns and your life.
