Podcast Offers News and Expert Insights About Depression WASHINGTON, April 26 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Anticipating Mental Health Awareness month in May, the Depression Is Real Coalition today launched a new weekly Internet audio-cast titled, “The Down & Up Show.” The purpose of the show is to provide timely and authoritative information about depression, a serious biological illness that affects 19 million Americans each year and affects nearly everyone in some way.

“The Down & Up Show” is sponsored by the seven member organizations of the Depression Is Real Coalition — American Psychiatric Foundation, National Alliance on Mental Illness, League of United Latin American Citizens, National Medical Association, Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, Mental Health America and National Urban League — and builds on the public service advertising campaign the Coalition produced late in 2006.

Housed on the Coalition’s Web site, http://www.depressionisreal.org/ and available on iTunes, a new episode of “The Down & Up Show” will be available every Thursday. Each show will feature top-level guests discussing the latest medical research, current policy issues, news and events impacted by depression and personal perspectives from people who have faced and overcome depression.

“The Down & Up Show” is hosted by Dr. Ellen Frank, a world-renowned expert in mood disorders and professor of psychiatry and psychology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. The inaugural show features a thought-provoking interview with Dr. Darrel Regier, Director, Division of Research, American Psychiatric Association.

Upcoming guests include: — Dr. David Shern, CEO and President, Mental Health America — Congressman Patrick Kennedy (D-RI) — Terrie Williams, celebrity PR agent and mental health advocate

“Depression affects us all, so it stands to reason that we should talk about it openly and accurately in order to help people manage the devastating effects of this illness,” Dr. Frank said. “Our show draws insights and hope from the personal experiences of researchers, celebrities and ordinary people who understand just how real depression is. Their stories are powerful and so valuable in helping to raise awareness, educate people and reduce the stigma surrounding depression.”

Depression is the leading cause of disability in America today, drains more than billion annually from the American economy, affects 19 million Americans, and results in thousands of preventable suicides.
