Sleep Assaults

Recommended Posts

For the past week I have been attacking my wife in my sleep. I never remember anything. She says she can't wake me. Has anyone ever heard of anything like this? I've looked online but it doesn't seem to be a common problem.

I talk a lot in my sleep, and have a tendency to sleep walk (so much so that my wife has put an alarm on our bedroom door to wake her up if I wander off). The other day I shoved my wife hard because I thought she was someone attacking me. She had leaned over to kiss me goodbye, and I was asleep and having a bad dream. I did wake up immediately after that and apologized over and over again. I haven't ever experienced anything like you're describing, though.

Black Manta,

It sounds like what you're experiencing might be rapid eye movement behavior disorder, or REM sleep disorder. It's a parasomnia (a type of sleep disorder) that involves acting out one's dreams. I would do some research on the disorder to see if you think it describes what you're experiencing, and perhaps more importantly, I would let your prescribing doctor know that you may be acting out your dreams. I don't know for sure what might be causing you to behave this way in your sleep, but your medication(s) may be part of the problem. Good luck, and I hope you wife stays safe.
