20YearsandCounting
I wanted to start a thread for those of us who really, really don't look forward to the holidays, for one reason or another. Maybe we have lost loved ones, maybe we are tired of the commercialism, maybe we are far from home... or any other reason. As usual, please remember the ToS, and please be understanding of one another. You are a great bunch here at DF, and you are so good at taking care of each other! 20YaC
JessiesMom
Oh Thank You! The holidays are always tough for me. Part of it is SAD and the lack on sun in the northern latitudes. Part of it is family strife and tough memories (my brother in law died by his own hand on New Years Eve). And part of it is the difficulty of balancing obligations. Family, friends, church, work......and so on. This is looking to be a deceny year what with great gifts for the kids and the holiday being in the middle of the week - but it is always tough.
Nightjar
Yep, add me to the list of people struggling at this time of the year. I have so much more to do and so much less energy to do it. More time with family members is difficult also. But, y'know somehow we'll get through it and live to tell the tale. We always do. To everyone who struggles with this...Wishing you an easier time this year. Take it day by day and you will get there. It doesn't last forever and spring is around the corner. Lots of love

I'm more of indifferent than really, really don't look forward to...is celebrating capitalistic consumerism a Western thing? Not like it's 3-4 continuous days of public holidays (at least in my eastern Asian country) Unless the holidays are changed to "Give <insert your own name> Money" Day
sober4life
I've never enjoyed a holiday in my life. People are poison and the holidays are a large dose of people. Every time I walk away feeling like I was poisoned.

watalife
Buying gifts and wrapping them very pretty, and sending out cards make for a happy Christmas experience for me. whether it means anything or not, I like that part
sober4life
I like that part too but they sure don't look pretty when I wrap the gifts. Nobody ever taught me how to wrap presents so you can about imagine how things go. I need to decorate this week though. Even grandma that never has anything positive to say about anything thinks I need to put up decorations. Stand_alone
Dec 24, the usual family Christmas party. Relatives congregated along with the relatives in law, hosted by my uncle. How do you do with the annual event? People prying. I think my cousin's husband is a d**k. Last time , I saw them he commented like like I am dressed up for church. I was wearing pants and sweater. They are from Vegas and like to drink.
psycholuigiman
I hate the holidays quite a bit. It brings an excess of togetherness, peace, and fun to some people, but not for me. Not these days. Everyone in my extended family is slowly dying off or losing their minds. Christmas and Thanksgiving are no longer allowed to be openly celebrated without risk of ridicule and hatred from certain extreme groups. I wouldn't be surprised if some group of people finds a way to fill even the birth of a new year with hatred and division. I have a loving family, but my desire to stay informed on current events is probably what makes this time so miserable for me. Much more than the looming shadow of death over my extended family, failed goals for the current year, or temporary sting I get from not having a romantic partner to snuggle up with. 20YearsandCounting
My heart really goes out to anyone in a service-related industry this time of year. Hold fast, don't let them get you down..... it will soon be done with!
Atra
My symptoms spike this time of year. I don't have that many happy memories and I feel even worse to be living with depression during a time of year when people make such special efforts to be cheerful and gracious. I decided that this year, for the first time, I will work on the 24th and on the 31st. I think I may actually feel better serving others on those evenings than holding a drink in hand with a faux smile pasted on my face. We'll see.
20YearsandCounting
Apropos of absolutely nothing, I truly identify with Bill the Cat this time of year. And I quote: 'THBBFT!' I would post dearest Bill, but he's copyrighted, and images are discouraged. That is all. Carry on. nojoy
5 days til Christmas and I have done nothing. Every depression triggers are firing at 100%. I don't know who will be coming to my house this year. daughter #2 always helped with everything during the holiday season, I don't even know if she will be coming Christmas day. I stay in bed most of the day, my mind shuts down there. The change in meds is helping to take the edge off, but I still feel like crying. I'm tired of being cheerful in public, especially when everyone says happy holidays. For me there are no happy holidays.
20YearsandCounting
I feel so out of sync with everyone this time of year.... I cannot seem to muster up the excitement that others feel about Christmas. I am putting holiday stuff up for one of my adult kid's sake, who is visiting us for a couple of days. If I focus on organizing and cleaning, and think of holiday decorations as a version of that, it makes it a little bit easier to do. Sort of.
sober4life
Well it's different for us. Why would we get excited about something that will probably make us sick? Most people get excited. Knowing I have to spend Christmas Eve with family feels like I'm waiting to go on trial for something that could put me away for life.
MaepleSyrup
Sometimes holidays with my family are a drag, mainly because there’s always some form of dispute or someone has to be the grinch of it all. Though I plan to embrace what I can since it’s the first year I can afford a gift for everyone
John_in_SF
I was pretty busy and connected right up until Christmas Eve. Then I got left behind while everyone went to do their family things. Spent the week from Christmas to New Year's in my usual isolation, knowing that I would be homeless again after the holiday. January and February are actually the worst time of the year for me, far worse than the holidays; perhaps it's because the festivity is over and there is nothing but winter ahead.
