Full time Mom

First in a panic, then depressed

Recommended Posts

It's my first time taking Lexapro and I'm really worried about how I'm feeling. I've always struggled with anxiety and years ago I took xanax for a very short period with immediate relief and then awful weening to come off it. My anxiety got worse recently so my doctor put me on 5mg of Lexapro. The first 5 days were excruciatingly panicky, high anxiety like I've never had in my life! Now going on the 2nd week (the doctor has decided not to increase the dose to 10mg due to the high anxiety I am feeling) I'm plunging into a depressive state, feeling lost in life and the world, anguished, helpless...really dark...what is happening? Will this get better or do I have a serious problem?

the usual time needed for lexapro to work is 4 to 8 weeks. in the meantime, you will just have to be patient. and btw lexapro is primarily againt depression, so it is wise to have xanax in store, but only for the real cases of panic attack, not to be taken on regular basis. it worked for me....

Just want to thank all of you for the support, after 4 weeks these meds have finally kicked in and I am feeling so much better. Had it not been for this forum don't know that I would have continued taking them and most likely would still be suffering

thank you all so much

Hi Full time Mom,

Sorry to bother you. I am in the same boat as you. This is day 11 on 5mg for me and i might go up to 10 mg on Friday and I'm scare as I still feel lots of anxiety. Just wondering how are you doing now and if you ever went up to 10 mg?

Hi Queenbee75 please do not discourage, I felt exactly the same way and suffered so much. Into my 3rd week I started to feel a shift and now after 1 month on he meds I feel better than I've felt in a long time. Do not give up! Plow through it and be patient because it'll be so worth it. Believe me!!! Hang in there!

Thank you for your encouraging words. I will try to be patient but like everyone else I just want to feel normal again. I will see the NP tomorrow who specialises in depression meds so we will see if she will up my meds.
