Am I sex addict?

Recommended Posts

This is something that's been bugging me. I've spoken to a good friend of mine who woke me up to the dangers I'm getting myself into in regards to finding "friends with benefits". Something I realized that I can't emotionally sustain, which is ok. I've hooked up before and dated recently, but miscommunication put everything in a huge rut for us. Like we know it can't work but I still have feelings, yada yada. It's something I'm gonna speak to my therapist about tomorrow. I am able to focus on my life and talk to friends/family, and go to school, spend time by myself, draw, etc. On top of that I've disabled and deleted my dating apps (and for good this time). Does it sound like I'm an addict?

The term "addict' is an oversimplification of your complexity as a human being,  Jessica.  You are a trillion times more than your sexual side and the term "addict" is not going to lead to understanding and insight but could possible thwart it.  You are a human being with needs and you are trying to get your needs met like we all are.  You may have made some mistakes along the way but we all have.  So I think "addict" is just a pejorative label that obscures more of the truth than it reveals.  That's my opinion.  maybe I'm wrong.  Your therapist will probably be more helpful to you.  You are certainly a wonderful person Jessica.  "Normal" I think is a continuum not a single point.  There is a range of normal.  I think it isself-esteem crushing to reduce oneself to a label.  It over-simplifies one to the point of inaccuracy and unfairness.  On that basis alone, I would not think you should apply the label "sex addict" to yourself.  Just my opinion.  I hope you find the peace and joy of life you so richly deserve!  Best to you!
