Depression vs Depression

Recommended Posts

I have 3 questions about the cause of depression which I am not sure about.

My first question is whether depression can be caused by itself and events make it worse?

second question, is "being alive" or "being yourself" an event to cause depression? (just being aware of your existence and not the events which follow with being alive)

third question, can depression be cause by something that a person is unaware of or doesn't find it depressive in the first place?

People can have a genetic predisposition to depression which is why you will even see some individuals with near-to-perfect lives get depressed. Being predisposed obviously doesn't mean that someone is guaranteed to get it, they're just more susceptible and bad parenting or other problems then triggers the depression to strike.

Being alive or "being yourself" per se doesn't cause depression unless you're predisposed. While depression can lead you to believe that life itself is something bad this is not how humans generally perceive it, in order for our species to survive we had to develop an optimistic bias. This goes as far as faith and people believing that even if life is bad something good is yet to come. You can look at the 3rd world where people have it way worse than any of us and yet few would qualify as depressed.

Depression can definitely be triggered by something you are unaware of. Someone growing up with non-supportive and emotionally distant parents may not see anything wrong with how they were raised because there was no overt abuse but a lack of nurturing can be a reason for someone to become depressed. There are a lot of other things that can negatively influence us even though we may not be aware of their significance.

One more stupid question, can depressed person be not 100% certain of the core reason why she/he is depressed?

Or emotional abuse in any type of relationship, especially if the relationship is close. You might not realize at first that something is wrong and you might not understand why you are feeling unexplainable, negative feelings.

Absolutely! In most cases it's a mixture of predisposition and circumstance so it's really difficult to determine what exactly caused it. This is where therapy can be helpful, it often takes a neutral outside perspective to properly analyze the situation and figure out the root cause.
