Adult children of alcoholics are impulsive. They tend to lock themselves into a course of action without giving serious consideration to alternative behaviors or possible consequences. This impulsively leads to confusion, self-loathing and loss of control over their environment. In addition, they spend an excessive amount of energy cleaning up the mess For me the result is 13/13. I am 28 and I cut off my dysfunctional family when I was 19. I left the country. Now, almost 10 years later, I feel so much older than I actually am. Until I discovered the term ACOA about 1.5 year ago, I had played a victim most of the time. Now at least I am glad that I have been taking a closer look at myself and how to heal from this but to be honest it takes a lot of energy and motivation to reverse the Laundry List. I keep a hopeful heart but at the same time I am fed up. Although I have never had an alcohol problem, the fact that I am simply unable to have fun and to enter relationships is probably what hurts the most.
