Yes, but 'highs' can be more angry than happy. Have they told you which categroy of bipolar they think you are? Type 2 is very misunderstood because people generally expects highs to be only happy, and that can include medical professionals. I wish you luck in your recover, no matter a diagnosis does not define us so focus on you not labels.

Well I'm starting this thread cos I just need to get these things people have said to me out of my head cos their just rattling around in there......I hope everyone understands I hope this can be a venting, releasing sort of exercise and not to contribute to anyone's anxiety or stress by triggering,,,.please add/share any bonehead responses you have heard!
Here's my "favorite" inappropriate responses I have heard to any discussion of my mental health/mental health in general
-"you are just having a pity party"
-"there's nothing wrong with u, it's all in your head"
-"you're just making things up and imagining that"
    -"get over it"
    "You worry too much"
"People who commit suicide are just selfish"
-if things were that bad for you you would be on the streets living in a bus shelter"

I've gotten to that point in my day where I feel like it should be over already.
I just don't have the stamina I did when I was younger, especially mentally and emotionally, but even physically.
Work itself isn't the main reason, not directly.  It's anxiety - the CONSTANT overactive fight or flight response that never seems to stop, and is especially acute in the workplace.  That's what wears me out and I just feel like shutting down.
On top of all the other effects and disadvantages we talk about here, is this dearth of energy.
The things I know or have heard/read to address and try to improve this include:
getting plenty of quality sleep (which is all I want to do these days, but it doesn't feel restorative) exercise, which does help, but is much tougher to make myself do when I'm feeling this badly Eat well (I definitely tend to stress-eat, so this becomes more difficult when depression gets worse meditation and relaxation practices (good and I try, but with 3 kids, I find precious little time) Taking set breaks Saying No - to extracurricular (which I've done a lot and I don't regret it although at some point, it adds to isolation and limiting life) Coffee (Caffeine) - too much isn't recommended.  Some seems okay for most of us although it isn't helpful to sleep and it can aggravate anxiety and can cancel out anti-anxiety meds, which I occasionally take. It often seems like and perhaps is, a vicious cycle.
I wonder what things others have found they can do to help with the exhaustion and lack of energy that depression tends to bring with it?

From what I have read they say the only affect medication will have if you don't need it is side effects. I had periods of both from ages 8-13 when it became a persistent thing. At 24 It is still with me, but medication has defintely helped balance things out and helped me recover faster from periods of hell. What took me down for weeks or months before can be managed in a few hours or days, and that is huge progress for now.

LouisRiel got a reaction from Steve P in What is responsible for your depression?
The situational aspect of mine is how it was handled not the cause. My horrible experiences with councelling before I became bad enough to need them is a huge factor in my recovery. There isn't an ideal day that would 'make me happy' though and I resent people who think it works that way. My family actually acuses me of 'Not being happy' about news if I am not happy in general. Also having a bad day off meds mean I need to go back on them and having a bad day on them means I need to stop taking them immediately according to them.

University is a much better place with accessability services, and Professors who make personal accomodations when they can. I have wrote exams and in class assignmnets during office hours, and during other times that worked for me. Also for 'disability related' reasons make up exams are available for exams which includes mental health reasons at least at my University.
My advice register with acessability services and inform your professors in the beginning. If possible schedule classes around times that you know are your best, and try to avoid conflicts that are not. My biggest mistake was thinking I could handle a Monday class till 9pm when I had an 8:30am class Tuesday. However, your needs may be different so do what works for you.

Currently spending my time sleeping and wishing I was sleeping. I used to go from one extreme to the other, but my meds have me out by 11:30pm and up by 9 at the latest to take my morning one.
