  1. Welcome to the forum! Sorry you have been having a rough time. It does usually take 4-6 weeks to get the full effect of Lexapro, so give it a little more time and hopefully you will start feeling better. If not, it may be that this particular medication is not for you and you may want to consult your doctor about trying something different. I found Lexapro wasn't super effective for me, but there are lots of people who have had a lot of success with it. I found it helped with my mood a little, but I was still very tired and unmotivated. I switched to Celexa a couple months ago and have had a lot of success since then. I know that may not be super reassuring, but there is still time for the medication to do its work! I hope that it works for you and you are able to experience relief. Make sure you check in with your doctor regularly about your progress. And please don't feel guilty for feeling depressed, because you have done nothing wrong! You have taken steps to get better and that's huge. Best of luck!
  2. I'm moving soon so I probably should have been packing all day, but didn't really accomplish much. Hopefully I will get my butt in gear this evening and get some work done. I have also been waiting around for people from Kijiji to pick up some things I am selling, which has been infuriating! No one is capable of showing up on time for some reason, and some people just don't show up at all. I wasn't able to go to the gym because I had to wait around for someone to come pick up a dresser I need to get rid of, and now the gym is closed. Why don't people respect others' time? Argh!
  3. I did some lap swimming today. It was a good swim too - my endurance with my front crawl is really starting to come along. Now that I'm on summer holidays it's a lot easier to fit exercise into my day so I have been doing some kind of workout pretty much every day. I have a back injury that limits me to low impact exercises though. Can't wait until I can run again!
  4. Wow, I just found out that a friend of mine from high school died in a plane crash yesterday. We weren't that close these days, but he was still a great guy and we would often catch up when we were both back home for holidays. This is terrible. His poor family... Thanks LaurynJcat, it's good to be reminded of that and keep things in perspective. Realistically I know this is a temporary setback and I will be ok - it just sucks for the time being. Glad I have a good support system to help me through these times too.
  5. I'm feeling pretty bummed lately because my life has kind of been moving backwards. I'm 26 and all of my friends are getting married, buying houses, having successful careers, etc. Meanwhile I am newly unemployed, ended a 10 year relationship, and am moving into my mom's basement (not to mention, I'm completely broke). I will be moving soon, and while I am excited to be closer to my family and friends (I am far away from home right now and pretty lonely), I'm not looking forward to all of those "catching up" conversations I'm going to have where I have to explain over and over to everyone how pathetic my life is right now.
  6. What time of day do you take your medication? Try taking your meds first thing in the morning if you aren't already, and see if that makes any difference. I actually found Lexapro helped me fall asleep so I took it before bed, but when I later switched to Celexa, I found taking it in the evening disrupted my sleep so I switched to taking it in the morning. Made a huge difference.
  7. For me the main cause seems to be genetics. There is a long history of mental illness on my mother's side of the family, and I began to experience depression from a pretty early age. In the last few months though, my depression started to spiral out of control, and while I'm not 100% sure of the cause, I'm sure moving away from my family and starting a job I hate had something to do with it. Also relationship and money woes.
  8. I injured my lower back so I'm in a lot of pain right now and can't move a whole lot. I'm taking the day off work tomorrow to go see a doctor. My doctor isn't available so I guess I will be going to a walk-in. Sitting in a waiting room for hours in pain is not exactly how I would like to spend my morning, but I guess that's my only option. On the plus side, I'm kind of looking forward to ditching work and hopefully getting to rest and be lazy most of the day. Other than that, I recently switched medications and had been feeling ok, but the last couple of days I started getting brain zaps for the first time. They are not pleasant! I really hope they go away soon. Hugs to everyone who is not having a great day!
  9. Hi Tyler, I recently switched from Cipralex, but I did take it for a few months starting in January. My start up effects were very similar to yours - I felt fine for the first few days, and then the side effects kicked in. I definitely experienced anxiety for a week or two (even though my issue is depression and not anxiety), and I had a lot of stiff/tense muscles and soreness. The good news is that all of those effects were only temporary for me, so hopefully they will be for you as well. I unfortunately don't have much advice to offer other than stick with it and try to power through. It takes at least 4-6 weeks to actually get the full effect of the medication and decide if it is helping you. Most of my side effects were gone by about the end of week 3.
  10. That's good to hear. One of the main reasons my doctor switched me is that Cipralex wasn't helping with my fatigue and lack of motivation, so hopefully I will experience the "get up and go" on Celexa too! I think I am experiencing brain zaps with this switch, though. I've never experienced them before, but judging by what I've read online it sounds like that's what they are. I hope this is a temporary side effect from stopping the Cipralex - they are quite unpleasant :(
  11. Hi there, I was just wondering if anyone here has experience switching from Cipralex (escitalopram) to Celexa (citalopram)? I found the Cipralex was not as effective as I hoped (I was on 20mg for 4 months) so my doctor has now switched me to 20mg of Celexa. I was under the impression that these medications were pretty similar, but hopefully they are different enough that I can see more results from Celexa. I just wanted to check to see if anyone has tried this switch before, and if anyone had success. Also wondering if I should expect many side effects. The pharmacist said I might experience some, but since I was already on cipralex the start up effects should be minimal. If anyone has any experiences they'd like to share, I'd love to hear them! Thanks :)
  12. Have a good weekend @RiverLight! Hope HR is able to help sort things out with your boss. I'm feeling pretty good today! Or at least "normal". I have been off work this week on medical leave and it has made a huuuuge difference in my mood. My energy is starting to come back too. I have also had more time to sleep and eat properly, exercise, etc. which is probably a big part of it. Today I went to swim laps and noticed a huge increase in energy and endurance during my workout. I'm also flying home tomorrow to visit my family for a few days and am really excited for that. It has been lonely here.

  14. I love Iron Maiden! I saw them a few years ago and they put on a fantastic show. I was pretty bummed they weren't coming to my city for this tour. I'm glad you ended up going, sounds like it was a great show. Glad you were able to experience some joy :)
  15. @RiverLight @salparadise6132 @LaurynJcat Thanks for the kind words. My doc gave me a note for 2 weeks of sick leave, and there is an occupational health nurse who will be meeting with me later to help determine if I will need more time off or any accommodations when transitioning back to work. Feeling really relieved now, though also feeling slightly guilty for abandoning my students. I'm going to make the most of these 2 weeks though and really focus on getting better.
  16. I'm feeling nervous. I'm going to see my doctor today because I have been feeling so terrible. My mood is low but also my pain and fatigue has been unbearable and my brain barely even works right now. I'm going to ask about taking a temporary medical leave from work, and I'm scared that she'll say no. I feel like I'm barely functioning and the idea of going back to work on Monday seems impossible.
  17. As an update on this situation - partner and I officially ended things and he's moving out. I feel like total garbage, but a silver lining did come out of the whole situation. I took this as an opportunity to reach out to my family back home and let them in on what I've been going through - told them about the depression, health problems I've been having, the breakup, and my work contract not being renewed. I told them I'd like to move back when my contract is up (end of June) and requested help and support with that process. I received an outpouring of support and offers to help, and I'm definitely feeling better knowing I'm cared for and have these wonderful people backing me up.
  18. I used to have a dog - a cocker spaniel named Yoda. He lives with my mom now because I haven't been able to find a pet-friendly place to rent since I moved after university 3 years ago. I would love to have a dog again!!! Here is a picture of Yoda as a puppy :)
  19. Thanks RiverLight. I am on contract with my job until the end of June, and I am thinking I will likely move back to my home province after I have finished. I'm also flying home to visit for a few days next month which will be nice. It will be expensive to move again, and my financial situation is not good right now, but in the end I think it may be worth it (cost of living is cheaper back home anyway). I am considering asking my mother if I could stay with her for a few months when I return to help get me back on my feet again. Not something I want to have to ask of her, but it might be the best move. Best of luck with your job situation as well.
  20. I feel like crawling into a hole and never coming out again. I have had a really hard couple weeks, and now the cherry on top is that my relationship with my partner of 10 years may be ending. And then I'll be stranded all alone in this stupid city I moved to for him, a thousand miles away from the rest of my friends and family. What a great way to kick off my long weekend.
  21. Definitely know how you feel. I'm getting really tired of having to wear "the mask" at work too. Talking to a therapist to get this stuff off your chest would probably help. I hope you are able to feel some relief soon!
  22. I finally got a hair cut after 5 months since my last one. I went to a new place and I really liked it. Then I went out to run some errands afterward, and the combination of looking fab and the beautiful weather had me feeling pretty good :)
  23. I just started reading "The Girl on the Train" by Paula Hawkins. I've heard lots of good things about it. I'm not very far into it so no opinions yet, but hopefully it will live up to the good reviews! I'm trying to read more lately (and spend less time on netflix), so I will likely be checking out some of the other books mentioned in this thread!
