    Know The Signs Of Depression

    May 30, 2012 /

MAY, 29 2012 Although your neighbor appears on the outside to be living a “normal” life, and your child is breaking sports records left and right, the people around you might very well be suffering inside from depression. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), 9.5 percent or 20.9 million American adults suffer from a depressive illness in any given year.

Trial Set to See if Drug Can Prevent Alzheimer’s

    May 29, 2012 /

Many of the study participants are genetically prone to the disease       Researchers are preparing to test an experimental drug in people genetically primed to develop Alzheimer’s disease. The best-scenario hope is that the drug will lead to a way of preventing the progressive brain-wasting disease, and to a better understanding of its destructive processes, U.S. officials announced Tuesday. The study volunteers will include some Americans as well as 300 members of an extended Colombian family — some only 30 years old — thought to have more relatives with Alzheimer’s than any family in the world, The New York Times reported.

    Treating Apnea May Help BP

    May 29, 2012 /

Treating obstructive sleep apnea in patients who have daytime sleepiness as a symptom may have an additional benefit — a reduction in the risk of hypertension. A pair of studies published in the May 23/30 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association point to a possible link between a reduction in hypertension and the use of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), but only one of the studies — an observational one — found a significant reduction in new onset hypertension.

The Outlook for Mental Health Services: A Perfect Storm on Our Hands

    May 29, 2012 /

Funding for mental health services has never achieved top legislative priority, and reforms requiring parity succeeded only after years of hard-fought battles. After the 2007 brush with economic collapse, the recession, staggering unemployment, budget deficits, and sparse tax revenues, however, the situation has grown significantly worse. Dire consequences are predicted for mentally ill individuals who need services and for the communities in which they live. The degree to which things have deteriorated was outlined during a special Congressional briefing in March sponsored by the National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors (NASMHPD) and the National Association of State Alcohol(Drug information on alcohol) and Drug…

Filmmaker Puts His Mental Illness on Screen

    May 29, 2012 /

Bud Clayman, a director of the documentary “OC87.” By ANDY WEBSTER Published: May 24, 2012     “This is not a film about hand washing,” says Bud Clayman at the start of “OC87,” adding, “It’s a film about the fear of acting on thoughts.” Mr. Clayman has obsessive-compulsive disorder — specifically “harm O.C.D.,” which involves intense anger and violent imaginings — and Asperger’s syndrome, which inhibits the grasp of social cues. This moving, penetrating documentary records his attempt to describe his conditions, confront them and learn to manage them.  “This is not a film about hand washing,” says Bud Clayman at the start of “OC87,” adding, “It’s a film about the fear of acting on thoughts.” Mr. Clayman has obsessive-compulsive…

    The 10 Personality Disorders

    May 29, 2012 /

By Neel Burton, M.D. The study of human personality or ‘character’ dates back at least to antiquity. In his Characters, Tyrtamus (371–287 BC)—nicknamed ‘Theophrastus’ or ‘divinely speaking’ by his contemporary Aristotle—divided the people of the Athens of the fourth century BC into 30 different personality types. The Characters exerted a strong influence on subsequent studies of human personality such as those of Thomas Overbury (1581–1613) in England and Jean de la Bruyère (1645–1696) in France.

Helping College Grads Find Work In a Bad Economy

    May 24, 2012 /

We all know that college grads are “confronting the worst job market in decades,” as The New York Times’ Steven Greenhouse writes. There is no question that this is a distressing state of affairs. Yet I’m afraid I don’t see this in a totally negative light. Although I acknowledge that it is painful for young people and their parents when dreams of a golden future are crushed; and even worse for families that spent money they could not afford on their child’s education, are part of the overwhelming numbers who now have to pay back student loans, or counted on these grads to help support parents and…

Millionaire Humbled by Visits to Charities

    May 24, 2012 /

BEFORE his visit to Cowley Road, secret millionaire Arfan Razak had two rules written on the kitchen walls of his chain of restaurants. Number one: “Do things as I want them”. Number two: “See number one.” But after a humbling visit to three of Oxford’s homeless and mental health projects, he has added a third – “I am not always right.” The father-of-three is the latest entrepreneur to appear on The Secret Millionaire programme, which sees wealthy individuals go into impoverished communities and give them money.

Parents’ Depression Linked to Problems in Children

    May 8, 2012 /

Like many other primary care doctors, I sometimes sense the shadow of depression hovering at the edges of the exam room. I am haunted by one mother with severe postnatal depression. Years ago, I took proper care of the baby, but I missed the mother’s distress, as did everyone else. Nowadays it’s increasingly clear that pediatricians, obstetrician-gynecologists and internists must be more alert. Research into postnatal depression in particular has underscored the importance of checking up on parents’ mental health in the first months of a baby’s life. But a parent’s depression, it turns out, can be linked to all kinds of problems, even…
