    PMS & PMDD

    July 26, 2009 /

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) Premenstrual Mood Changes Many women in their reproductive years experience transient physical and emotional changes around the time of their period. In fact, at least 75% of women with regular menstrual cycles report unpleasant physical or psychological symptoms premenstrually. For the majority of women, these symptoms are mild and tolerable. However, for a certain group of women, these symptoms can be disabling and may cause significant disruption in their lives.Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)   First introduced in the 1950s, the term “PMS” has been widely used by the popular press and thus has been variably defined. PMS typically refers to a general pattern of…

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) Definition Defined Once More

    July 25, 2009 /

A group of researchers proposes the definition for  Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) should be shortened to include only mood and cognitive symptoms. If accepted, the 35-year-old definition found in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) would not include symptoms that are associated with medical illness. The proposal is based on a study that appears in the online first edition of the journal  Psychological Medicine . The current definition of major depressive disorder includes nine symptoms — a definition that has remained essentially unchanged since the 1970s.

College Students – Depression and Academic Performance

    July 25, 2009 /

Aug 7, 2009 – According to new research, college students with depression are twice as likely as their classmates to drop out of school. However, the research also indicates that lower grade point averages depended upon a student’s type of depression. There are two core symptoms of depression—loss of interest and pleasure in activities, or depressed mood—but only loss of interest is associated with lower grade point averages. “The correlation between depression and academic performance is mainly driven by loss of interest in activities,” says Daniel Eisenberg, assistant professor in the University of Michigan School of Public Health and principal investigator of the study.

Happiness Unpacked: Positive Emotions Increase Life Satisfaction by Building Resilience

    July 15, 2009 /

Happiness Unpacked: Positive Emotions Increase Life  Satisfaction  by Building Resilience   Newswise — People who seed their life with frequent moments of positive emotions increase their resilience against challenges, according to a new study by a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill psychologist and colleagues. The study, “Happiness Unpacked: Positive Emotions Increase Life Satisfaction by Building Resilience,” appears in the June issue of the bimonthly journal Emotion. “This study shows that if happiness is something you want out of life, then focusing daily on the small moments and cultivating positive emotions is the way to go,” said Barbara Fredrickson, Ph.D., Kenan Distinguished Professor of Psychology in UNC’s College of…

Economic Crisis Increase Stress and Suicides

    July 8, 2009 /

Jul 2009    An article published Online First and in a future edition of The Lancet reports that the rising rates of suicide and murders in the population are directly associated to the growing unemployment rates originated by the economic downturn. Another effect is the decline in road-traffic accidents. Active labor market programs aiming to maintain and reintegrate workers in jobs could tone down some of these unfavorable effects. The article is the work of Dr David Stuckler, of the University of Oxford, UK, and Professor Martin McKee, of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK, and their team.

By Diana L. Walcutt, Ph.D. Jul 2 2009 –  I am a 25 year old female that cant seem to be happy with anything. My brother passed suddenly a year ago and that sort of triggered a total collapse. I have been to an in-patient week long therapy rehab, which helped while i was there but soon after i got out i started feeling hopeless again. I have totally changed my life; i stopped bartending and started school again. Im doing well in school, i have a wonderful boyfriend, and a great support group but every waking second I hate my life. I dont understand the point, i dont enjoy…
