ABUSIVE, OFFENSIVE AND INAPPROPRIATE POSTS
Posted 21 June 2004 - 04:33 PM
We are often asked why we can't just stop some of the more unpleasant members from posting such upsetting words in the first place. Why does it have to appear publicly on the Forums, causing so many members to become visibly upset? And lastly, why do some of those post remain on the Forum for so long once they have been reported?
The answer is quite simply that WE CAN. However, there is always a catch and a balance to consider. We can turn on a certain option so that every single post written by all members goes in a queue so that the Admin Team can review it and manually release it before it goes live.
For those of you who were here last November, 2001, we're sure you'll remember that when that new version of the software was installed on .com, that option was set to REVIEW by default. It took us a day to figure out what was wrong. Trust us. We received hate mail from members demanding to know why they received a message stating that their posts were being held up for review. It caused great anger and mistrust among many members.
We do not see the need to review every post before it goes on the system. Questionable posts happen so rarely that it is not called for. Secondly, we do not have the time, interest or manpower to be burdened with the process of reading and approving each and every post. There are so many posts every day it would be impossible to carry out this task. And it certainly is not why we volunteer our time to this Forum. Add to that the delay it would cause for your post to appear. These actions would also restrict all members from their privilege to have their posts be seen immediately. We do not want nor will we accept the role of becoming "total censors" of every word posted. Lastly, it was quite obvious from the accidental use of this option during the installation that this would also be a very unpopular decision on our part!! It is unfair to restrict the majority of members based on the rare occurence of a few upsetting comments. We could never implement it as an instantaneous process with the volunteers we have.
This is part of the risk we all take for being participants on an open, public Forum. We feel very strongly that it is an acceptable risk and the right action to take.
The answer to the last question has really been answered above, but let us restate a few facts. We are a group of volunteers who come and go on the Forum as you do. We cannot guarantee that one of us with the authority to handle the situation will be here at any given time. (Of course the more members who volunteer to Moderate increases the odds.) It is just a fact that you will have to accept if you use this Forum. It will be handled but it may not be handled immediately. Obviously, if there was a paid, full time staff that would not be true. The fact is that every person on the Admin Team is a volunteer with many other responsibilites in their lives.
All we can suggest is that you stay away from the member and those offending posts until someone can take appropriate action at a later time. If you find it too personally upsetting, log off and come back at another time when it has been resolved.
