i know its aweful to say but sometimes i wish i had cancer instead. its so frustrating, i cant have a bad day (resulting in me being quiet) without being called grumpy. and when i admit im having a bad day i get "did you take your meds?"

no one cares and people think you arent trying hard enough. its a friggin struggle as it is to not let the depression swallow me up, but on top of it, i have to struggle to appear "fine" so i dont get the stupid crap from others. im so done. you can only fight for so long and seriously, what am i fighting for

Hi allalone6

I know that it is not easy to not let others misunderstanding and ignorance get to you, but if you give up because of others ignorance then the stigma of depression will never lift.

Hi AllAlone,

The stigmas surrounding brain cooties can be very frustrating. I have found that in gaining complete acceptance about my condition myself - logically and emotionally - has really helped me deal with the misconceptions, stigmas, and ignorance of others.

It still does hurt sometimes when people think I just need to try harder; but by refusing to accept the other person's ignorance - it hurts much less.

I hope you have a good day and weekend,
- Matt -

When people are ignorant about my illness I allways take time to quietly tell them how anxiety and depression "works" - how it is an illness just like cancer, diabetes and so on - how it's just a part of me that needs to be accepted - some people need to get the explaination several times - but I take the time if needed!

I don't mean to be the ultra-cynic here, but a lot of people don't even care and are not that sympathetic even if you have cancer. Our society just doesn't like sick people (although mental health disorders still have a stigma that some other illnesses do not have.)

I was diagnosed with cancer last Nov. I didn't get an ounce of support or help from my family. My friends were there for me all the way. Let me tell you, the anxiety was through the roof and depression was skin tight. You generally can't see cancer either.

Sheepwoman, sorry you had to go through such a rough time. I hope you are well.

You can choose your friends but you can't choose your family.

Not everyone is of the mind that depression is our fault. It just appears that the majority of people think that way.
