Greetings Tiredofthefight,

I'm sorry but I am not familiar with the acronym TRD. Could you tell me what it means? I have been fighting depression for over 50 years. I want to help but I just don't know what TRD means
Mental Illness is a serious health condition not to be trifled with. It requires treament by highly trained, experienced, qualified and Board-certified physicians, physician- specialists, and mental health professionals. There is no substitute for this professional care. I am not a mental health professional, only a fellow sufferer.

"A man is really ethical when he obeys the constraint laid on him to help all life which he is able to help, and when he goes out of his way to avoid injuring anything living. He does not ask how far this or that life deserves compassion as valuable in itself, how far it is capable of feeling. To him, life itself is sacred. He shatters no ice crystal that sparkles in the sun, tears no leaf from its tree, breaks off no flower, and is careful not to crush any insect as he walks. If he works by lamplight on a summer evening, he prefers to keep the window shut and breathe stifling air rather than see insect after insect fall on his table with singed and sinking wings. If he goes out into the street after a rain storm and sees a worm which has strayed there, he reflects that it will surely dry up in the sunlight, if it does not quickly regain the damp soil into which it can creep, and so he helps it back to the lush grass. Should he pass an insect which has fallen into a pool, he spares the time to reach it a leaf or a stalk on which it may clamor and save itself. Animals suffer as much as we do. We must fight against the spirit of unconscious cruelty with which we treat the animals. " Dr. Albert Schweitzer.

"Compassion, in which all ethics must take root, can only attain its full breadth and depth if it embraces all living creatures and does not limit itself to mankind." Dr. Albert Scheweiter.

I think it also stands for Treatment Resistant Depression. I know that there are a lot of new medication combination strategies that have been used successfully for TRD. If your psychiatrist is unfamiliar with these strategies, you should find a different psychiatrist. I'm so sorry you are having to deal with this. Recurrent depressions have wreaked havoc on my life. I'm hopeful though, that I can emerge from my current depression and finally build a sustainable and responsible life.

Hello Tiredofthefight. I've been battling severe depression on and off for decades. Have you tried ECT? I've been through over forty treatments over the years and it always lifts my depression though it doesn't last more than a few months. I have been using a cranial electrotherapy stimulation device a few months now and I recommend trying one.

I have a friend who had the deep brain stimulation procedure done in NYC a few years ago and, along with different classes of medications (SSRI, atypical antipsychotic, glutamate antagonist) has cured his TRD.

The causes of TRD can also be undiagnosed bipolar disorder and medical conditions like hypothyroidism (which I have) or anemia. Maybe you can try a different type of talk therapy? Never blame yourself and try to remain hopeful.

I'd say I'm in the treatment resistant depression camp --- I'm having a lot of trouble beating this last bout. I don't have any special solution: I just keep plugging along with exercise, yoga, trying new medications, therapy and self-help. It's very difficult, especially rarely feeling any enjoyment in much of anything. I keep hoping for some "tipping point" where I'll feel at least OK. So, all I can say is you're not alone and I feel for you.

take care.

ellemint, have you ever been manic or hypomanic? just asking because withafeather made a good point. Sometimes TRD can be undiagnosed bipolar.
