I've been fighting depression for about 4 years now. I have good days and some bad, mostly good now. Every once in awhile I get really depressed over certain tihngs and my body starts to change almost immediately. My body starts to hurt, alot. It feels as if I ran a marathon and lifted weights all day. Not only that, my eyes start to hurt pretty badly. The only thing I can compare it too is when you stay up for a few days and it hurts to close your eyes. Most noticeable change is that my body gets EXTREMELY cold. My hands feel like their is no blood going to them. They feel like empty granite sculptures or something. Following these physical changes comes that lack of motivation to do anything, even be alive, and then you know the rest... Anyway I was wondering if anyone else here gets cold like me or has similar physical symptoms.

I get all of these, except my eyes are not hurting badly just irritated. I always thought the eye issue was my rosacea, and the body pain was arthritis (runs in my family - I've had joint pain since my teens). But it does get worse when I'm depressed and ESPECIALLY when I'm fatigued as well. I'm not sure if these symptoms are the depression just makes me more vulnerable to these sensations. The body temperature does naturally decrease when you enter a sleepy phase....
You might try getting your thyroid tested, if you haven't already. But my thyroid function is apparently normal.
Best wishes. If you get any answers, please share.
Hugs,
Lauryn

Hello there, I have the eyes hurting thing, I get this tension in the back of the eyes like the muscle who is behind them is tired.
The coldness , no but would be quite desirable with this summer hot weather.
I think everyone has different body manifestation of a mental discomfort and you are doing good to take note of what happens in your body.
Do you notice some change in color of the hands when you feel like there's no blood running there?

Yes I do in fact. My hands get pale white, almost as white as paper. I have been keeping leather gloves with me and whenever I feel like my hands are going to start getting cold I put them on and it helps alot. It's very weird that this happens. It only happens when I feel really dead inside. A few years ago when my and my ex-wife would argue, I would just shut down and feel so terrible and my hands would turn into ice and I felt tired. When the arguments were really bad I would get so cold that my entire body would shiver and I needed to wear a jacket or coat even if it was 90 degrees outside. I havn't heard any scientific reasons for this. It feels like when I am really depressed, there is no life in me anymore and all the warmth and love that was once there is gone so I feel cold physically. Just a thought.

Hi paradiselost4992,
I get almost identical symptoms when I get really depressed, (as in, nervous breakdown depressed, or when, like you say about yourself, I feel 'really dead inside'.) I think it's part of the depression, and it's probably different for everyone, but I'm not sure.
