I feel like a sponge that can only absorb bad feeling into itself. Does anyone else get this?

It's like anything I read in books or see in films will be filtered through me, and even though there will be good things as well, they seem to pass on through me whereas the bad things will stick. It's the same with my memories from past events and life in general, such as things I might see on the news or hear about through social networking websites.

It can be the case that I'll 'suck up' characteristics from fictional characters in books particularly, maybe as a coping strategy to try to be someone else for a little while, as I loathe myself so much.

I'm not sure what I'm trying to say anymore, apart from maybe trying to find out if this is 'normal' behaviour or if it's something I should be worried about.

I feel so low.

I can relate to what you're describing. My default setting is to perceive myself and the world through mud-splattered glasses.

I am a natural pessimist so I am generally pretty negative. I try to remind myself of the positives of my life when I can get past the negative feelings.

Thank you for your responses dukeofjarvis and Rattler6. It helps to know I'm not alone in thinking this way.

I try to look at the positives, because really I am very lucky to have friends and family and a nice home, but these things don't seem to prevent me from feeling really low in mood. Sometimes the experiences I get are psychotic as well as mood disturbance, but I thought for the topic I posted that 'Depression Central' would best fit the bill.

Thanks again for your replies.
