Hi,
Im looking for some advice as im seeing my pdoc on 12th May and at the moment the medication im on isnt working, and I want it changed. I know finding the right meds can be hit or miss and it varies for each individual.
Im trying to do a bit of research before I go to my pdoc so I can ask if a certain med would be beneficial to me, and I think one of the best ways is to ask you guys for your experiences.
Ive been on prozac in the past but last year it refused to work for me. I started on mirtazapine, but even after upping the dose to 30mg it isnt working the way it did before and I dont know what way im going to be each day....... one day really depressed and anxious and then I can have a day like today..... really good!
What I would like to know is, what medication worked for your anxiety, (especially ones that dont put on weight like mirtazapine), did it work straight away (like mirtazapine) or did it take the usual hellish 6 - 8 weeks?
Thankyou

Hi Holidaychick, As far as I know all antidepressants take 4-8 weeks to reach optimimal benefit for the person. The worst ones for weight gain are Paxil and Remeron. The ones least likely to cause weight gain are Effexor, Prozac and Wellbutrin. Wellbutrin is actually prescribed off-label for weight loss. Both Effexor and Wellbutrin are also prescribed for anxiety.
Benzopines (klonopin, xanax, lorazepam) are often prescribed for anxiety. They are short acting and do not cause weight gain, however people tend to become dependent on them. I take Buspirone and Gabapentin for anxiety. Both are fairly fast acting. Neither are quite as effective as Benzopines but are as effective as anti-depressants.

Hi Holiday,
I am sorry you didnt get more responses. I have hd that experience myself.
Yes as Iowa said was correct for the anti depressents she listed. Most anti depressents "may" cause weight gain, unfortunately. Some more than others and of course it depends on the person. People have different reactions.
Under every manufactoring "prescribing information" on the internet has the numbers posted on their clinical trials. Granted these are not in my opinon that ligit only because its not until meds are used on a wide population meaning released to the general public is there a much larger pool of events.
Generallys speaking if you look up the brand name of the drug, there will be a document saying prescribing information on the manufactor website for most medications.
Boring, tedious and hard to read if a person is currently that depressed.

I take .5 mg Klonopin (clonazepan) daily. It's long acting and addresses my anxiety issues. For panic attacks, Xanax is preferred because the duration is short and you get relief immediately. I have Xanax too and if I think I'll be in a high anxiety situation I'll take that. Both are benzos and you can become dependent on them if you take alot of them for extended periods. They will address anxiety but not depression (though Xanax gives you a pleasant buzz for a short time). No weight gain issues. I tried antidepressants but it seems I'm allergic to them (skin allergies). SSRIs, SNRIs, tricyclics, etc. It could be all in my head, hehe. My pdoc seems to think so. I don't know what to think. So I don't take them though I feel I could use them. I would suggest you not take Wellbutrin simply because it will heighten anxiety big time....at least that's what it does for me.
Good luck!
