I have been on 40 mgs of citalopram for about 6 months now and i am at a stand still i am just not feeling any better all of a sudden. My doc just upped me to 60. I am wondering if upping it will even do anything? I have read somehere that takng 60 is not any better then taking 40. Is this true? Will i get more side effects, like get more sleepy?

Hi Dawn28,
I was on citalopram for 8 years for anxiety and depression. At one point my doc upped it to 60mgs and I did have improvement. Another doctor told me that 60mgs was no better than taking 40mgs and reduced the dose. I crashed big time and needed to go back to the 60mgs.
However, if you have not noticed any improvement in 6 months AT ALL, it may not be the med for you? Did your doc give you a reason?
I don't remember any side effects from going up to 60mgs except maybe I felt more emotionally numb.
Hope this helps some...

Hi, well it was working pretty good. I mean at first i wanted to die and now i can function pretty well but about a month ago i just felt like i wasnt seeing anymore progress and i felt myself slip a little again. So i guess thats why he is upping it to 60. He said if that dosent work then we will change meds. I am also having issues with my bc pill i think, and that may be whats affecting my mood as well so i am going off of them. Thanks.

Hi Dawn28
I was switched to 60mg a few weeks ago because I slipped back into depression on 20 and 40mgs. Anyway, I think my mood is stabling out a bit. However, I'm so tired now that it's debilitating. I'm hoping this will wear off soon. But as it stands I could sleep all day if not for the need to eat and use the bathroom. It's sucks and i've been late to work a bunch of times.
Hope you have a better experience.

Just an update that the side effects have mellowed out significantly. I feel pretty normal again and have more energy than before. So, all in all, I think 60mgs has been an improvement for me over the 40mgs.

If you're not having much success at 40mgs I'd probably consider trying another drug.
I've always found Lexapro to be powerful even at a low dose. I've always taken 5-10mgs.
