pkm,

welcomeani.gif to the Remeron room and well to the whole of DF! I hope you'll find this place useful!

I'm on 30mg myself. I used to be tired, especially in the beginning but then it seemed to lessen. I'm dead tired at the moment but I don't think that's because of the Remeron. I sleep well on it though. No weird dreams or anything so far...
I hope this med will do the "trick" for you! It's a pity antidepressants only work by trial and error, isn't it? It's pretty much crossing your fingers and hoping it'll work.

pkm, thanks for joining. Keep us posted on how you're doing! All the best!

Anyone have anything Good to say about remeron?
It makes me way hungry and thats good because after being medicated on Adderall for 5 years (for ADD), I've never had much of an appetite and look borderline anorexic because of it. Today is my third day of taking Remeron and I've been eating a lot healthier (and more! WOOHOO!!)

does anyone feel 'creaky jointed' or is this just my age (50)? with this med, I've just been moved up to 45 per da, so i'm on the tired routine again until they wear in.

I'm not aware of this as a side-effect, but anything's possible. I wonder if you're achey because the fatigue has you moving less??? Just a thought...
Some people notice fewer side-effects on higher doses with Remeron, so I hope you're one for whom this happens. I wish you luck on the increased dose - let us know how you're doing.

Hello!

I have achey joints wt the med, nothing too bad but definetly noticable esp in my fingers! That was on 30mg.

I'm down to 15mg now - I'm changing meds again  only becuase mirtzapine hasn't really touched my depression.

Hope everyone is doing okay

Meg x

Edit to say I'm 24 so they joint thing with me isn't age... err I hope!!

Hi, Im Andy. I just been prescribed Remeron as ive just come out of a very intense but loving relationship of 3 yrs. Usually I wouldnt have a problem as i always try to be up and positive, but I will be honest with you guys and tell you that as in all breakups im down and currently feeling rock bottom. The fact is ive had a real bad three yrs in all aspects of my life apart from the relationship which was amazing and through all that time she was my rock. I felt nothing was that bad as long as she was in my life and now she has gone. This is kind of like the final nail in the mental coffin and im starting to crack. I have only just been prescribed this anti depression drug and Im looking to see if it will help. Any advice would be appreciated as to be fair I am STILL a little weary in using this type of medication even though I really think I need it.
Thanks for listening.

Welcome to DF, Andy-w welcomeani.gif
I'm sorry you have to deal with this situation.
It's a good positive first step you're taking by starting on medication. Just try to be patient, as it can take a while to kick in fully. Meanwhile, keep posting here for support...

[size=2]Hi everyone, I have been visting your forum off and on, and decided to become a member today. I too take Remeron (Mirtazapine) I am on 30MG, and it seems to be working, when I remember to take it. The side effect gaining weight is why my doctor put me on it in the first place, When I started taking the meds, I was uderweight at I think 95-96 LBS. I am at the moment at around 110-120 LBS. I am comfortable with the side effect.

Hi everyone, I am new to this forum and I have just been switched from Paxil CR (25 mg) to Remeron 15 mg per day. I have been depressed for most of my life ( I am 41) and have tried pretty much all of the ad's out there over the years. Some have worked for periods and either petered out or I stopped taking them because I was feeling better and thought that I didn't need them anymore The last successful AD was Remeron but the weight gain ( 25 lbs) was too much. Also Remeron was making it tough to get up for work in the morning. That was 2 years ago. Since the I have been on Celexa, Prozac (for the third time) and Doxepin. Celexa destroyed my sex drive, Doxepin made me sleepy all day and Prozac seems to do a little but has a limit and it isn't good enough. So back to the Remeron but with 15 mg instead of 30.

I wonder if anyone has made this particular switch and any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks

eastyork250,

welcomeani.gif to DF and the Remeron room! I hope you find things useful here. DF is a great place for information and support.
I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble finding the right AD. I haven't made any similar changes so I can't really advice you on that. But I'm on 30mg myself (together with Effexor xr and Solian). I didn't have a lot of trouble starting up this med. A little somnolence in the beginning but it decreased after a while.
I've mentioned this a few times already but anyway. Remeron seems to be causing less side effects (especially the sedation) in the higher doses (30mg and 45mg). Ofcourse everyone's different. I hope the 15mg does the 'trick' for you. It works great for my sleep and so far I didn't put on a lot of weight. It's been six months since I started now.
Keep us posted on how you're doing!

Wishing you well...

Hello.
Today I am staring remeron.I have been taking Paxil for the last month but I am having severe insomnia which is a big concern of mine.I am also having a few other annoying side effects from the paxil. Anyway I am going to taper off the Paxil while taking remeron at the same time. I have high hopes for Remeron.I have heard a lot of good things about it, except for the weight gain issue. But I am going to make sure I get regualar exercise and i hope that does help me avoid the weight gain, b/c i am a bit overweight already and it is very concerning to me.Anyway I'll probably post a few questions about this med too.Wish me luck!

hey everyone i just got the internet so i'm happy i can access sites like this now i guess i'll give you a breif history and ask my big Q
i've had major depression for 5 years with severe anxiety i started on zoloft and slowly went up to 200mg but being awake for days nearly killed me so i changed to 30mg mirtazipine and went up to 60mg this helped my anxiety but had a zombie effect that i liked at first because it was so nice to close my eyes but it got old fast and i was changed to 30mg mirtazipine and 100mg zoloft which i have been on for 6 months also when needed i take valium or xanax. at first i felt this was the miricle combo because i could sleep at night and be of good mood during the day but i'm starting to question this now.
my moods are seeming to go in cycles i feel perfect for about 2 weeks then my mind starts to speed up and i start getting frustrated and angry i have trouble driving, concentrating, caring in general because all i can do is think about keeping up with myself, this can go on for 1-2 weeks i usually need xanax alot during this time but try not to take because of its addictive qualitys.
this usually followed by mild depression for up to a week and i start having trouble getting up in the morning and this fades into feeling great again.
has anyone been on medication combos like this?
is this normal?
does anyone have any sugestions?
thanks fal

Welcome Fal!

Have you discussed this with your doc? You may want to keep a journal of these mood swings and ask him to assess you for bipolar disorder. Sounds like you've both have been very busy with the meds! Ask the doc if this could be due to this regime.

Fal,

welcomeani.gif to DF! I hope you'll find things useful here!

I agree with Jackie. It'd be a good idea I think to share this with your doc. I'm on a combo with Effexor and I don't have any real experience with this sort of mood cycling.
Keep us posted on how you're doing!

Hi Canadian Girl,
Well its been a couple of weeks since you started taking the remeron, how's it going? I have been taking remeron (mirtazapine) for about 4 years now and I haven't had any problems. I watch what I eat and excerise daily and haven't experienced any weight gain. It has helped me sleep, I might be a little draggy in the morning, but getting up before noon shouldn't be allowed anyways. Good luck.

Hi Phil,
Im glad to hear that you haven't gained any weight with Remeron. Its been 2 weeks at 15 mg's and tonight I am supposed to take 22.5 for a few days to a week, depending on side effects, and how I feel and then up to 30 mg's. So far not many side effects.I slept really good in the beginning but the last few nights I didn't sleep well. I am happy to report that I am not really having side effects. My left eye twitches a bit but Im not entirely sure that is related.I was a bit agitated when I started but I was also discontinuing paxil at the same time and now I think it was from that.
My doc says that when I up the dose, it should help me sleep again but from everything I have read/heard about remeron, the higher doses are less sedating.Everyone is different though, so I guess I'll see what happens.
I agree that getting up before noon shouldn't be alloewd! Coopwink.gif

Hi again just wanted to say thanks again i would be lying if i said i wasn't completely knocked around by the mention of bipolar but after researching i couldn't deny that i had a lot of those symtoms.
so i was in a way relieved that there may be a reason for my terrible behaviour and personallity that i know isn't really me. I started that mood diary too and if it was a rollercoster it would be pretty cool.
so i went to my gp and pdoc and told them the truth something i never have done because i didn't want them to think i was a bad person and you where dead right i am now offially bp1
i stop mirtazeipine and zoloft today because it was sending me into what they call rapid cycling and i'm starting Depakote tonight which is an anti-seizure medication which is also used for bp.
so i don't know what will happen but it has gotta be better then before? i hope
anyway i thought you'd like to know that your advice as simple as it was helped me look at something i had never consided and may well have changed my life so thankyou thankyou thankyou

Hi all, just thought I'd pop in and say hello really.

I've posted my story in the main introductions page "Welcome to DF" on "a depression and mental health support group" (page 2) ... I won't repeat it all here for you because I don't really like going all *me*me*me* really!

Suffice it to say that i've been on mirtazipene (mines called Zispin - is that the same as remeron?) for about a year now, prior to that i was on Venlafaxine but that didn't really help at all.

I thought I was doing ok on it until a couple of weeks ago when i started self harming again (it was a one off this time, there's no way i'm going back to that again!)Being honest I had had a drink that night (i don't drink normally) so I'm sure that had an effect. I'm currently off my work and my doctor is referring me to be seen in the hospital as soon as poss. This is really scaring me as it suddenly makes the whole thing seem *serious* somehow.

Anyway, Just wanted to say hello ... I'm off to read over your posts - might take me a while!

Love, Sky. hugs.gif

Hi, Sky!
Yeah, Zispin and Remeron are both name brands of mirtazipine.
I'm sorry you cut, but it's good that you're seeking help.
Pop in anytime, and let us know how you're doing...

Hi Autumn and Lizard,

thanks for the welcomeani.gif.

I have a bit of a question and I'm not sure if this is the right place to post it so sorry if it's not!

As I mentioned before I've been off work for a couple of weeks and am awaiting a hospital appointment (this process has just started and knowing the way things are it could take quite some time before I get this appointment). When I went to hand my line in to work I was talking to my supervisor and said I didn't expect to be off for more than another week or so.

Her response was that she knew it would take a while before I was seen at the hospital and that coming back to work too early could end up with me feeling worse than I already do (work is pretty stressful and has been part - although only a small part - of the problem).

I really don't know what to do now, I feel guilty about being off - really guilty actually - while I'm off everyone else will have to cover my share of the work and it's really preying on my mind.

I know you folks aren't doctors but I'd be interested in any advice you might have on this. I understand that this might sound pretty trivial but feelings of guilt are a very strong part of my depression.

Thanks again
Sky

Oh, I so understand! And your feelings aren't trivial at all. They just speak volumes about what a responsible, caring person you are.
I went through this same type of situation several years ago. Try your best to let go of the guilt - you have an illness that needs to be treated, and your first priority must be your own health!
Do you talk to a counselor or therapist (or is this part of what you're waiting for with your hospital appointment)? Therapy really helped me get a hold on what I needed to do for myself, and to deal with the guilt.
Keep posting and asking all the questions you have. There are lots of people here who understand.

Hi Lizard, thanks for coming back to me.

To be honest I have no idea about what's going to happen at the hospital..I know I should have asked but that appointment with the doctor was a bit of a *blur* really. I'm not currently getting any counselling but if I could I certainly would.

I guess this is something I should ask about when I go to the hospital. It's funny - your reply used some of the very same expressions my supervisor did when I spoke to her! About making myself the priority for instance...I suppose the fact that she's been through depression herself gives her a better insight.

Once again, thanks for your reply! hugs.gif

Hi Sky,

Oh yeah, I understand about the guilt too Coopwink.gif. And hon, feelings are never trivial!
I agree with Lizard though. Try to take care of YOU in the first place. Health is sooooo important!
It's good to hear your supervisor knows what you're going through. It's so hard for people to understand what depression is about when they didn't go through it themselves. Try not to worry about your work too much (easier said than done, I know). I'm sure your supervisor's got everything under control. Focus on getting better now!
I hope your appointment turns out okay. Keep us posted!

Hi folks,

well, quick update for you...I went back to the doctor's last week and asked to get signed back to work but they didn't think it was a good idea and suggested I take another couple of weeks off.. I went in and spoke to my supervisor who was absolutely fine with it.

However this morning I have received a letter from our head office asking for permission to obtain my medical history from my doctor's. They say this is in order to better understand my situation but I really don't want them to be involved or to have this access to my medical history. I've nothing on there I particularly want to hide but I just feel this is invasive..

Anyway, I'm going to go back to the docs and ask them to sign me back as of next week - I can't take this hassle as well as dealing with everything.

Argh! This has completely brought me down again...when I was really starting to feel better. Not to the point where I'm going to self harm again but now I just feel so hopeless unsure.gif

Thanks
Sky

Ugh! Can they really ask for that there? I wouldn't have thought they could here in the states, but you never know...I may be wrong. I understand your reluctance to give them the right to review that information...it's private and should remain so. A doctor's note should be more than sufficient to let them know that you need the time you need. Maybe you should just tell your doctor about it and explain how uncomfortable you are with it (there is a reason they call it patient-doctor confidentiality!! It's sacred!!!) Hopefully your doctor can best direct you regarding how to proceed. I'd also mention it to your boss. She sounds like a wonderful lady and I'm sure she could help here too. I'm sorry you're having this added stressor on top of everything else! Hang in there though...you *are* getting better, and this too shall pass.

Take care my friend! hugs.gif
