Hi, i've been taking prozac in the 20 mg once a day and it just isn't working. I want to up my dose to 40 or even 60, depends on what my doctor says. The question I have is I know that prozac comes in 20 and 40 mg tablets, but not 60. So if I get prescribed 60 mg/ day, do I take 3 20 mg or how is that administered?

Thanks, do you take them all at once like in the morning as one dose or space them out?

I take 40mg prozac, and I used to take it daily in the morning. I've since been cut back to 1 every other day; because of its long half-life, my pdoc said that is fine. I could have switched to 20mg daily, but I already had quite a few of the 40mgs so I just went to every other day.

I would think that the reverse would be true as well; if you take all 60mg at once, with the long half-life it should work properly in your system. Of course, the very best info should come from your doctor or pharmacist.

Hi Buckten,

Sorry I am a bit late to respond......
But I started on 20 mgr a few months ago, by now I am up to 60 mgr. ( 3 20 mgr. caps. in the morning)
That is what my psychiatrist recommended, so that's what I take.
I know you can also take it in smaller portions throughout the day, if a full dosage makes you to jittery. But it also depends on what you use prozac for. If used to threat bulimia you are suppost to take them all at once in the morning.
But like Karen said, talk to your doc, he/she knows what is best for you.

Good luck,
Sarah-nicole
