I Appreciate The Good Days!

Posted by LibraryLady , 29 February 2012 · 232 views

I re-read my blogs since I started, and I do write a lot about my headaches and allergies! So, today I want to say I'm feeling pretty good! My headache is low-level and my nose is not twitching and trying to jump off my face! LOL!

I am developing a new interest and I'm curious to see if the old adage "You can't teach an old dog new tricks" is true or not. I am starting to learn American Sign Language. It's a lot more complicated than I realized, but I'm super interested because we have a large number of Deaf students here on my campus. It's because the big national Deaf university, Gallaudet has an extension campus here and it is housed right down the hall from the library! There is a big specialized classroom for the Deaf across the hall from our front door!

We have a good number of Deaf students that come in the library and it's very frustrating to try to help them. I want to communicate more with them and in a better way. So, I'm learning ASL, which is their main language. It is actually a different language from English. ASL has it's own grammar and syntax, as well as it's own slang and colloquialisms (sp?).

So, I'm enjoying this new experience and I've already signed with a few of the Deaf students. I asked one before Valentine's Day how to say Happy Valentine's Day in sign and then on the 14th I ran around and signed it to all the Deaf students I could find! HaHa! They must think I'm crazy!

So, I think learning new things is really important, no matter your age. You have to constantly be learning. It helps with everything! I think that's why I became a librarian. I love to read and learn things. And, I like to help other people learn things!

What new thing have you learned recently?
