Ive been taking zoloft for about 6 months now. Everything is pretty good so far. Im in college so I do drink occasionally. Ive drank a little before while being on zoloft and I dont really think it effected me in any way except maybe i felt a little more depressed the next morning(which makes sense). I also think i felt more tired when i was drinking than i normally would. Im just wondering how it is drinking excessively while on zoloft? Something like a "power hour". I know thats a lot but hey im in college. Would something like this not be safe since im on zoloft? Or would i be fine. Please dont lecture me on not drinking. I just really want to know if this is safe or not. Will i feel really tired? Will i get sick (throw up easier)? Any helpful information would be great. Thanks!

Hi alexc3022, There is no safe level of alcohol when you are on any SSRI/SNRI/TryCyC antidepressents. As we all respond differently to the meds so do we differ in our response to alcohol with or without meds I drink and take Citalopram, but I only drink socially in the evenings. When you drink with Zoloft if you feel ok afterwards with no extreme after effects, no lowering of mood etc you may be ok with your drink consumption. We are each responsible for what we put into our body and its effect. Best Wishes Jim Boe

How can we answer your question without "lecturing on not drinking"?
I`m sorry, but like Jimbow says; alcohol and our medication don`t go together, there`s no "safe level" and the effects can be very serious. Now, drinking a little alcohol when there`s a social gathering I can understand, though I wouldn`t do so myself and it`s advised against. However, why would you want to take the chance of "power drinking" with your medication?
The policy here on DF is quite clear; we don`t drink with our medication, because it can hurt us.

Would something like this not be safe since im on zoloft? Or would i be fine. I find I get SOOOOO sick when I drink since being on Zoloft. Even after only a few drinks I feel like I'm ready to hurl at any moment. It def doesn't agree with me. I was never a big drinker anyway. It all depends on the person I guess. Tink

I'm in college and on Zoloft as well. I am on a light dose and have not seen much difference at all with drinking on and off Zoloft, but that is my own personal experience. I am only on 25mg a day though, so there is not as much in my system. Just take it slow and see how you feel after a few drinks and decide when is a good time to stop, no super duper binge drinking or you will feel bleh!

I take Zoloft, and I occasionally drink on the weekends. Doing so generally doesn't give me problems. Occasionally it might, and I'll notice that I'm becoming intensely depressed. So I'll stop after the first drink and not drink anymore for the rest of the night. That's just my experience, though.

Drinking while on ADs de-stabilized me, to the point that I had to switch meds. Not fun.

Hi,
This is from the Posting Asking and Sharing Forum . This is from a former member: QUOTE Until a few minutes ago I was not even registered with this forum. I just happened upon your post when Googling Cymbalta and alcohol...
PLEASE do not drink if you are on or going on Cymbalta. They do NOT mix. My 23 year old son was on Cymbalta for depression...and within a couple of weeks of taking it and drinking he attempted suicide. Like you said, alcohol is a depressant. If you are on Cymbalta it is most likely for depression. Alcohol will NOT make you feel better--and mixing it with cymbalta can be deadly. My son's alcohol intake increased once he started the Cymbalta. He drank until he blacked out. He never did that before....you don't know what kind of effect mixing the two will do...everyone is different. Never mind what it can do to your liver. PLEASE.....as a concerned mom, I beg you...do NOT drink while on Cymbalta. Why play Russian roulette?? We are so sorry that you all feel that alcohol is a must while on antidepressants.QUOTE This quote below was from one of our respected former moderators in the Wellbutrin Forum...I think it is well worth noting: Edited by Lindsay on May 15 2002,06:49

:::stepping out of moderator mode:::
Anybody that drinks while taking an antidepressant is taking irresponsible chances with their physical and mental health!!!
There are specific warnings not to combine alcohol and antidepressants.
1. Both are processed by your liver and you risk liver damage.
2. Drinking affects how much of the meds are absorbed into your body.
3. Meds affect how the alcohol is absorbed and can result in being extremely drunk, huge hangovers, and/or alcohol poisoning and chances of seizure.
4. Alcohol is a depressant - you are making your mental health worse by drinking.
Do you *really* need to drink? What is more important, having a couple drinks, or getting your mental health in order? As for the toast problem, millions of alcoholics and Muslims manage to live without alcohol. Toast with seven up or ginger ale in your glass, or if the appearance is that important to you, just have a sip of champagne and don't toss down glass after glass.
Is it realistic to ask people not to drink? In my mind, yes. Pregnant women stop for 9 months because they know it isn't safe to drink - for your mental health, surely you can not drink for the time you are on antidepressants. It's a matter of setting your priorities straight.
If you personally choose to drink and mess up your mind, go for it, but don't come whining back here when you drop into a pit of depression. There are enough people here that tried and learned the hard way. But don't go around telling other people that it's ok to drink when it isn't!
:::back as a moderator::: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We suggest doing a search on alcohol (here on DF) and see what you come up with. We will not discuss posts dealing with illegal drugs and/or alcohol abuse with your medications even if it is 'only' a glass of wine. It is in our TOS.
We really do not want to know how 'well' and 'good' you felt using. Your posts will be deleted and you will be warned by the Administration as we will have no part in such discussions! These are depression forums and alcohol whether being abused or not, has no place for it here on the forums, ( as you can see from the date of the quotes), we have implemented this for a very long time.
