I started taking 5, then 10mg of Celexa about 8 weeks ago. I met with my pdoc at 5 weeks and she wanted me at 20mg. So, I went up to 15 initially since I'm so sensitive and after 3-4 days of adjusting, have felt great for the past couple week. I just went up to 20mg last night. I am nauseated, tired, and feeling sort of out of it, with some increased anxiety. I take it for GAD. I have felt that way at every increase but I'm just wondering. . .how will I know if I'm taking too much? I mean if I should have just stayed at 15?

Hi Faith,

Obviously we're all different but I would think that if you're still getting the over-medicated zombie feeling after a few weeks then that may be a sign. It's really about what can make you feel better for a sustained period of time. 20mg is still a pretty low dose so unless you're really sensitive to meds it shouldn't be too high for you.

PRT xx

I knew I was at the correct dose when I could function again.... the crying stopped and the days began to get brighter and i started to enjoy things again.

I measured that on a scale of, for example, when the improved mood made me function and i had been functioning for a month... then i knew i was coping and the meds were right

I think you prob need to give your new increase time to settle and see how it goes. As the doc prescribed 20mg it was for your benefit so it is best following his/her treatment plan for now and discuss it at your next appointment

Thats basically how I knew. I knew when the crying stopped and I could get out of bed that the dosage was decent. I would ideally like to be on 20mg of celexa and not 40mg. 20mg I felt ok but I still had crying spells. At 40mg, I feel like I'm in a constant fog and I get a LOT of headaches. Plus I'm a stay at home dad with a 3 year old and an 18 month old to take care of. So it's hard. A very big challenge.

Well I've been on the 20mg for 4 days now and I'm having more anxiety. My husband thinks it's just my cycle and not the medication. I was feeling good at 15 but I wanted to follow doctor's orders. I had only been on 15 for two weeks.

Should I wait a little longer on the 20 or go back to 15 and see what happens?

I was having panic and hot flash feelings all night.

HI Faith,

An increase in anxiety and temperature are quite common side effects. If you can put up with it I would stick it out. I've just come down to 20mg and have an increase in anxiety. Just try to keep in your head that it's the meds. xx

That makes sense. . .did you mean to say you went up to 20mg? Because I'm increasing not decreasing. . .

No sorry I realise that. I'm on my way back down. Trying to get off the tablets. But I was originally on 20mg for a few months before going up to 40mg. I had a hard time getting used to them at first. Was pretty much a zombie for 6 weeks so I remember it well! xx

Thanks. . . that is good to know!! I should have gone up in bigger jumps I think so I wouldn't have keep feeling good for a week or two and then mess myself up again. I'm going to hang in there because I felt great on 15 for two weeks, but I want a dose that will help out long term.

20 shouldn't be too much harder than 15 to get used to. Hope it works for you at that level as I found the 40mg a little numbing on the old brain cells! x

Yeah I'm hoping so too. They say people with higher intelligence have a higher incidence of mental illness. I think I'm losing a few brain cells already but the alternative for now is worth it. However I don't just want to be grinning and smiling into oblivion. I can only imagine what 40mg would be like.

Years ago I took Tofranil and it helped but I slept like 10 hours a day. This was before kids. At the time it was an OK trade-off but these days I need to be sharp at work and then sharp enough to keep my kids safe when I'm home.

God I'd love to have 10 hours sleep, where can I get some of that??!! wwww.gif I may break that theory of intelligent people!

40mg never made me grin...just stopped me crying which I suppose was worth it. Feel a lot better since coming down though. xx
