I've tried all of that more or less and i STILL can't sleep. The ONLY thing that helps me to sleep is a large dose of diazepam. I wish this wasn't the case, but even on the diazepam i can be awake all night. I often go 3 days and nights consecutavely with no sleep before my mind and body are so exhausted I could fall asleep at the wheel of my car!! So i swing between sleeping while i'm walking and not sleeping at all. I just can't seen to get a normal sleep pattern.

Seroquel works wonders.

I would not suggest this if you have nightmares, but melatonin can work wonders. Sleeping pills keep me awake (ambien kept me awake for 3 days) It does make you dreams very vivid though.

my first thought after reading the topic "Ways to Get that Needed Deep Sleep Without Taking Pills" was: Is there any?

I have suffered from insomnia time to time. Currently I do get to sleep a little but it is hard. I wake up all the time and getting sleep is hard. Half of my day is spent just to try and get some rest. And for some mystical reason my doctor doesnt want to prescribe me sleeping pills. So thank you for this post. I hope this is some help for me and for other people here. :)
