Hey I'm currently being treated for major depression, but my depression gave me a lot of anxiety issues as well. So I'd say both, although depression is the original source.

I was put on citalopram for both depression and panic disorder. It is meant to be particularly helpful to panic disorder. I've had both for muc of my life so I'm afraid I can't help the 'chicken or the egg' discussion. My doctors think they are interlinked.
--------------------
Dx: psychotic depression, panic disorder, rheumatoid arthitis, 'something else going on' Rx: mirtazapine 45mg,respiridone 1mg, adalimumab 40mg, azathioprine 150mg, hydroxychloroquine 400mg, prednisolone 5mg, diclofenac sodium 150mg, codeine 30mg, zaleplon 10mg, calcium and vit.d

I just started Celexa 20mg and Trazodone 50mg and I am on a fast track to being myself. I have alot so far (10 days) success with my medication. My doctor said that my anxiety/depression is worse in the winter because of my S.A.D. (Seasonal Apptitude Disorder). I am starting to use light therapy which seemed to be a real help also. I am very hopeful that I will continue to improve.

QUOTE (PrincessB @ Dec 8 2008, 12:40 PM) I was diagnosed with depression and started on 20 mg of citalopram in Sept. I started taking 40 mg citalopram in October, plus 25 mg trazodone at night (to help me sleep). I told my doctor that I have anxiety problems, and he said the citalopram would also help with that. So far, the citalopram hasn't done anything for my anxiety, although the depression is much better. I have an appointment in 2 weeks with a psychiatrist to see about a change in meds. I haven't been diagnosed with anxiety - I think my doctor assumed it was just a result of the depression - but I've had problems with anxiety for most of my life. I expect the psychiatrist will also find an anxiety disorder of some kind. i feel the same way...like my anxiety turned into depression..maybe i need to find a different doctor..with me though i've been depressed and anxiety ridden for so long i cant really recall when it all started. i am on 20mg of citalopram and am feeling nothing for 6 days..i guess it takes a while to begin working though...but let me know how it went with your other doc.

I've been on 10mg of lexapro for almost 6 weeks. I was diagnosed with Major Depression Disorder with psychotic symptoms and Generalized Anxiety Disorder. It's helped quite a bit. The arc of the medication has been interesting. I was told it could begin working as quickly as 1 week (and it did). I initially felt emotionally numb, but that has faded. My thoughts seem more clear and rational. I don't have this ticking clock in my head anymore like I used to (i.e. if I had to meet up with someone or make an appointment, my mind would be racing at the speed of light; I'd be extremely stressed out about being a few minutes late to meet up a friend, and begin thinking that they're pi**ed at me). Since I've started the medication, there have been a few nights of severe depression and panic attacks (or high anxiety), but I've been much calmer otherwise. My social anxiety has subsided quite a bit, too. I'm not criticizing myself before and after most social interactions with people, thinking what seems to anyone else as a good or neutral conversation as an event in which people were silently judging me.

The first time I was put on Celexa, it was for depression alone. But then the second time that psychiatrist saw me, he said he would have to do something about the anxiety and he doubled up my Celexa. I was later diagnosed with just plain old anxiety once, Social Anxiety Disorder twice, depression with psychotic features once, Bipolar I 5 times and schizoaffective disorder once. Prozac (which I was put on instead of Celexa because I was pregnant) didn't work on my social anxiety like Celexa did that first time I was on Celexa, even though Prozac is supposed to be the best for social anxiety. Nor has the Celexa lessened my social anxiety any the second, third or fourth times I was on it. Oh well; the shrink says he'll change my antidepressant to something else if the Celexa doesn't work. :)
