hi

I have been on Prozac since April and have been all the way up to the 60mg dose. My dr now wants me to try citalopram. I just wondered if any one had some experience to offer.

I am currently back down to 40mg and be tapered off. I am worried about weight gain on Citalopram. I have bulimia so it is a genuine fear that I will balloon even if I stick to a calorie controlled diet. My dr said I shouldn't have any weight gain side effect.

I would rather be depressed with high anxiety than have to gain weight. (I am not underweight- so don't need to gain.)

Thanks for any replies

Hi fallenangelstar,

I was originally on Prozac, but it didn't help me, so I switched to Celexa. The Celexa has definitely helped me much more than the Prozac ever did, with both depression and anxiety. I have gained some weight but, frankly, I blame that on the Zyprexa, not the Celexa. I wouldn't worry about weight gain too much.

Good luck, and I hope this all works out for you!

Hi fallenangelstar,

I don't think you will put on weight on celexa if you stick to a controlled diet. I put on weight but it was as much as a result of a change in lifestyle than anything else. I did find celexa made me crave sugars and carbs a little and I gave in because I have no self-control (!) but if you are disciplined, then you shouldn't have any trouble. It won't make you put on weight just by itself, it may just try to persuade you to eat a little more.

Thanks for your replies. I think after speaking to my dr this morning, she said it may cause nausea and that she has come across weight gain being a problem. So I am hoping that I will be ok. I am going to be put on 40mg in a couple of weeks.

so tomorrow is day 1 of hopefully a better me.

Good luck!! Just see how it goes as everyone is different. It made me feel sluggish at 40mg which can make you less inclined to get up and about and do exercise. I think if you try to stay positive about it and stick to your routine, you'll be fine. Let us know how you get on. xx
