Hello,
I am newly pregnant and have been put on Sertraline by my Doctor (100mg) I dont think it has started to work just yet.
How long will this take?
Has anyone else ever been on this or another SSRI whilst pregnant?
I am thinking maybe 100 mg is a bit much>??????
Im very worried!!
Not sure.
Any replies very welcome.
Kat

Hey kat, 100mg isn't that high of a dose. I think you can go up to 200mg on Setraline. My wife was on 100mg before she switched to Lexapro. Also, I'm on 50mg which is the minimum therapeutic dosage. So don't worry about taking the 100mg, especially through a new phase of your life that can be challenging to say the least.

As for how long it took, it all depends on the individual. For me, the first month was horrible. I went from horrible depression to massive anxiety all day to happy, almost manic times. For that first month I had mood swings daily, sometimes many during one day. After a month, I started to slowly feel better. The good times got longer and longer and eventually I had a string of good days. Then, at 2 months, I had 3 days of horrible anxiety again. I was ready to give up on the Setraline, but decided to persevere. I'm glad I did. The last week has been great. No real anxiety and no depression. In fact, I feel like myself again. I don't really even feel I'm taking an AD which is how I think it's supposed to be.

Hang in there and give it at least 6-8 weeks. Many times the up's and down's are the hardest part. Just remember that things will get better and stabilize out. It's frustrating at times, but in the end it's worth it.

hi,
i am currently on sertraline 50mg/day.my pdoc wanted me on 200mg/day but i had bad side effects when i went up to 100mg so i went back down to 50 as i felt much better on that.

i have to say,i would have thought your doc would have started you on the lowest dose seeing as you are pregnant, and only put you up higher if you didnt feel any better.

i was on prozac in my last 2 pregnancies due to severe anti-natal depression.the first time i started it at 20 weeks and i started to feel better at about 27 weeks(ALOT better).in my last pregnancy i had to wait till i was past 12 weeks(the first 12 weeks were absolute hell),i went to the gp as soon as i'd had my 12 week scan, begging for prozac!again,it took about 6-7 weeks to kick in but it was so much better when it did.

both babies were fine and didnt suffer any adverse effects.im so glad i got help on those 2 occasions.i ahve 5 children altogether and i struggled and suffered through my first 3 pregnancies,as AND just wasnt recognised then, and the doctors just kept telling me the depression was due to circumstances.

how far along are you?

I started taking Lexapro at 20 weeks pregnant with my 2nd baby. It took a full 8 weeks to just start working, I swear it took so long I was getting discouraged and ready to switch to another one. Finally when it started to work, I really felt much better. The racing thoughts, the anxiety and all that crap started to go away and then my son was born. I took 10 mg which is the average dose. My son is perfectly healthy and happy and never had withdrawals from the meds after birth. You better believe me if I ever get pregnant again I'll take the meds as soon as I can cause they are a life saver to me whem I'm pregnant. I has got to be something hormonal or I don't know cause I was extremely depressed and anxious with both my pregnancies. Actually with my first one it started at 28 weeks pregnant and with my second it started at around 20 weeks...I don't want to know when it'll start if I have another pregnancy! Also After I had my first one, about a year later, I found out I had hypothyroidism and that also causes depression and anxiety...Anyways, if you need to talk, I'm there

Hi. I started taking Zoloft before I got pregnant with my first child. I was taking 50 mg daily. After I found out I was pregnant I came off until 12 weeks (those weeks sucked emotionally) and then went back on during my second trimester. My son was perfectly healthy and happy and still is. I'm now almost 11 weeks pregnant with our second child and am once again off Zoloft til 12 weeks. These last 3 weeks have been hellish. I'm pretty sure my doctor is fine with me being on Zoloft the entire pregnancy but I was trying to make it through the first trimester without the medicine. If I can just make it through another week I'll be back on at 50 mg a day. I can honestly tell you the mix of hormones, nausea and coming off an AD really suck. If you're on it and it's helping I'd stay there. My doctor keeps telling me Zoloft is one of the safest to be on during pregnancy. I also took it while I was breastfeeding my son, if that helps. As much as I'd like to live without it, I'm just not there yet.

I feel a bit more reassured after reading other women have been on Sertraline when expecting.
You are all great people.
Thank you so much.
Some days I feel I am in a big dark pit and cannot claw my way out.
I had a baby when I was 18 and he died . This is why I have my mental health issues now you see?
I am dying for the anxiety to go away and leave me. I HATE it.
Once again thankyou all.

I just wanted to ad that I was on 100mg of zoloft through my most recent pregnancy, I weaned sometime through the third trimester (I think it was over the last month or so).

Baby was born healthy. I went back on zoloft a few weeks after the birth and was breastfeeding too. I didn't notice any adverse effects then either.

Congrats on your pregnancy.

Hi Kat! I was on 200 mg of Zoloft before getting pregnant last August. I spoke to my OB about it and they had me reduce the dose to 150mg which I took throughout my entire pregnancy. My baby boy is going to be a month old on Saturday and he is just fine!! Also, when I first started taking Zoloft (about 2 years ago), I was on 75mg and that started working after about a month, but I felt MUCH better after my doctor and I decided to gradually up the dose to 200. HTH!

I was taking zoloft during my pregnancy and the pregnancy went just fine. After the baby was born (like within hours) the nurses at the hosp told me that the baby seemed very agitated and his cry was strange. I told them that it was probably due to the cord being cut (which also cut off the baby's zoloft supply thru me) and the baby is having withdraw from the zoloft. They did not like that answer. They ordered drug tests for the baby and everyday I was in the hopital they accused me of doing drugs while I was pregnant and told me the baby was gonna die of SIDS if I didn't admit to being on drugs. That was not the worst part. They discharged me from the hosp but wouldn't discharge my baby till the drug test results were back. they kept him for one and a half weeks till they got the test results back. The test came back negative for drugs and i didn't receive a single apology from anyone for accusing me of being a drug addict or for making it hard for me to bond with my newborn. I did however receive a $8000 bill from the hospital because the insurance company would not pay for his unnecessary week and a half hopital stay. I hope nobody else has to go go thru anything like that.
