Hiya everyone. Well i have had depression since my teens, with 3 major episodes, once with my son 11 years ago, then 6 years ago (drugs didnt help) then again 3 years ago when i had my daughter. was in hospital for 5 months that time. then was fine for over a year. in the jan of this year i discovered i had a hyperactive thyroid. by the feb i was feeling great happy all the time, by march my family started asking if i had been drinking as i was so joky and laughing all the time, started spending money that i didnt have, thinking about sex all the time, racing thoughts, pressure of speach etc. eventually go admitted to hospital with hypomania/mania.

Because my thyroid was overactive, they said in rare cases this can cause hypomania.

i have since had my thyroid removed and i am on medication so it hopefully wont go overactive again.

so they are saying i just have to wait now to see if im bipolar or not. it is driving me mad. i just want to know one way or the other - is that stupid. i suppose i just want to be prepared. and make plans for if i was to go back in to hospital.

also i dont know anyone in real life with bipolar, so i dont know how much the depression and mania can effect your ability to live a noraml sort of life.

another pioint is that i got told by one pdoc that traveling through time szones was risky as it could spark a manic episode. i would love to go to america and tialand to see my friencs but im to frightened that i will end up in a thai hospial

thanks for ANY information or advice you can give me. i feel so alone not knowing. my family just say i dont have it. but i cant convince myself.

thanks for reading my essay lol

I am still waiting for my appointment with my psychiatrist but I think I am bipolar. My pdoc put me on pristiq for depression. I left a few days ago from America to Europe where I have a 7 hour time difference. It triggered a manic episode for me a few hours after I landed....because I missed my dose of pristiq for 2 days. Also I remember when I traveled from Florida to Vegas which is a 3 hour difference and I also experienced an episode...
All of the symptoms you describe sound bipolar from what I've read and how I've diagnosed myself....but I'm not a doctor :-)

I'm sorry you went through so much! hugs.gif I can understand your frustration. If you have a lot of symptoms that point towards Bipolar, talk to your Dr about it, and if he is not willing to listen or to talk to about it and why he thinks you are not, simply get a second opinion. It is hard to diagnose and sometimes can even take a few years before being diagnosed correctly. Let us know how you are doing.

You can read the information we have here, that might make it more easy for you to understand. Bipolar comes in different 'forms and sizes', some of us are able to live with it as long as we take medications and some of us need hospitalization on a regular basis because it is more severe and hard to get under control.

Hi thank you both for your reply. Adorabelle, thank you for those links, some of them didnt open but i think it is my crappy pc. I did open one, and it did mention thyroid. I have spoke to my pdoctor. they have always (even before manic episode) questioned if i could be bipolar or bipolar 2. i have had periods in my life when i have been sleeping less, very irritable, doing lots, getting lots done, but never 'high'. did go out a lot and did take drugs and was a bit wild in the sex dept. that lasted a good few months.

the doc is now saying that i just have to wait until i have another hypomanic episode.

another question if you have time, they said i was hypomanic, whihc i think i was but i drove myself to the hospital in the middle of the nite in my jammies as i thought i was going to **** someone, i thought people were dead, i told them i could fly. i thought id killed my daughter and that the hospital was a prison and i was to be executed. it sounds like a bit much for hypomania???

Adorabelle- freespirit how are you feeling at the moment? l? thanks for those links it is much appreciated.

thanks for your time both of you

I have Graves Disease (hyperthyroid). Before I got treatment to destroy my thyroid and put on thyroid meds, I felt very edgy, nervous, sweating a lot, shakey and very hyper. It takes time for the condition to become normal. Hyperthyroid can mimic mental illness. They used to put people with Graves Disease in mental hospitals. They didnt know so much back then.

I have graves disease too. which actually caused my hyperthyroidism, and even tho i have my thyroid removed i still have graves disease which can still affect your eyes, did you know that. you have to keep an eye on that excuse the pun.

im still at aloss. i spoke to the endocrine doc yesterday and he said he didnt know if my manic phase could have been caused by hyperthyroidism, it has happened before but is rare.

thank you for your reply

Hi Toonafish
Did you have your thyroid gland surgically removed or with the radioactive iodine method? I guess you had your thyroid numbers checked recently? I know it can give you bulging eyes but other than that I wasnt aware of any eye problems from it. My nephew got Graves Disease too and he recently sent me a list of medical things that can come to people with Graves Disease. If you want the list, pm me.

hiya, yeh it effects the muscle behind the eye making it thicker causing bulging eyes, but i think in some cases you have to have the tissue removed surgically. doesnt sound nice does it. i had a full thyroidectomy, and the scar on my neck is still quite red, only done 1 month ago. iodine treatment wasnt for me as i have kids and had to stay away from them for a while if i got that treatment. i would like the list. not sure how to pm.

Okay so you definitely have no thyroid gland whatsoever. (althought I have heard they can grow back, not sure if thats true or not tho) I had the radioactive iodine. The way to pm someone is go into your controls, then hit compose new message, a box comes up and thats where you put my name in Gentle Sun, with some kind of subject line, then you write what you want to and hit "send message". At the bottom you can hit "track this message" and that way you will know when you have an answer from me and you just go into your inbox to read it. Hope that helped some.
