I came off Citalopram as it was not helping and went straight onto Mirtazapine.
The side effects started immediatley :

Very agitated/short tempered and easily annoyed becoming very angry at the least little thing.
Upset stomach
Bad headaches
Excessive sleeping
Unable to keep still – arms can’t stop moving
Slurred speech
Inability to concentrate on anything – can’t read/watch TV
Severe indigestion.

This got gradually worse until after a week the headaches were completely debilitating and the indigenstion had got so bad I felt as though I had swallowed a house brick that had stuck in my throat and wouldn't go up or down. the pain spread up to my inner ears it got so bad.
The constant headache left me barely able to see and unable to stand light
No amount of pain killers or indegestion tablets made any difference at all.

I have decidd to stop taking the tablets completely (against all advice) because I just cannot stand the pain any longer.
I will try to get an appointment with my doctor on monday.

Hi, you switched from noe type of Ad an SSRI to another type an SNRI which is much more powerful. Ask your Doc about switching to another SSRI instead.

you doctor or PsyDoc will have a great of knowledge (PsyDoc) and will be able to suggest a better alternative.

Normally SNRI medications are used to treat SSRI resistant depression.

So See You Doc ASAP

Best Wishes

When you say you came off Citalopram, was that sudden withdrawal? If it was, your symptoms or some of them may be attributed to discontinuation syndrome. Of course it is possible that it is having a bad effect. I tried Effexor and may as well have taken rat poison, the nausea was intolerable. But be aware that one AD will not stop the withdrawal effects of another. I stopped paroxetine and went to fluoxetine and had the withdrawal and both these drugs are SSRI's and very similar. So when changing from one AD to another you still need to go thru a discontinuation procedure.

Hi jayceew,

Just wondered how you are getting on with your Mirtazapine ? Have the side effects settled down and did your Doctor regulate your meds?

It would be lovely for an update if you feel up to it.

Best Wishes

Well I've finally managed to see my GP who said I did the right thing by stopping taking the tablets after 7 days. I've decided to try a couple of weeks "chemical free" so I'm at least starting from a base I can understand.
I asked my doctor to pass on the side effects so at least it's on record. I'm starting to feel like myself again at last although my memory is still messed up among the less unpleasant issues.
Anyway thanks for the support. Mirtazapine is definately not for me.....

Hi,

Great to hear from you again. Best of luck with any new meds you Doc might try.
