Hey everyone.

Okay, so I was previously very light. Too light (not something I want to return to). After a period of SERIOUS depression/psychosis/delusional disorder I have gained a lot of weight. I was housebound and binge-eating *numb-eating* for months and trying out a few zillion meds. Prozac is one I am still taking as although it makes me very tired, it really does help my mood. So I have read many scare stories about gaining weight on Prozac and not being able to lose it blah blah blah etc (these are all over the net, as no doubt you all know)... I know that most of this weight I have gained has had more to do with my over-eating and lack of movement than the contributions of any medication. But now that I'm feeling a little more stable in the mind, I was hoping to go about embarking on a gentle exercise regime to shed some of it.

So I was wondering if people could share their stories about whether or not they have been able to successfully lose weight and sustain the loss while remaining on the medication (especially long-term users). I want to adopt a healthy approach for long term success (no yo-yoing) and would greatly appreciate any input.

Thanks everyone :)

Hi
well I have started Prozac...been on it now for 4 weeks...I have lost 8 pounds...but..I think it is because...i have not got a big appetite when I first started it....and I suffer from TMJ..which is really bad right now..that I am on a soft diet
I have tried Effexor, i gained weight and had terrible side effects..
Years ago I was on prozac..and I dont recall gaining lots of weight...
so good luck...hope it works for you
Im still not sure it is for me...as my Fibro and Tmj is bad now...yet the depression and controlling of anxieties is getting better...
I guess i will give it another 4 weeks...and see..if it helps the fibro and TMJ
Good luc
tracy

Hi Powderfish,
There are a lot of topics on weight gain/loss with SSRI's, not necessarily just with Prozac which IMHO is the least likely SSRI you would gain weight on.
As you know everyone is different and has different chemistry's with their reactions to meds. Do a search on DF about your weight issues and ssri's.

This is a holiday weekend for the US so responses are light right now. Try the Posting Asking and Sharing Forum..Albeit not with the exact same questions as cross posting is not permitted.

A good Forum to read is One Step as there is much on this subject.

I am glad you are feeling more stable now on Prozac.
Take very good care, and keep on posting. You are not alone. hearthrob.gif

Tracy - Give it a little while longer. I didn't feel it really kick in properly for me until the 2 month mark. I really hope it works for you! And thank you for relating your experiences.

Lindsay - Thank you very much. Very helpful and much appreciated. :)

I took Prozac for 14+ years and it worked well for me. I had no weight gain with it. Weight is always the number of calories and enough aerobic exercise to burn up those calories. Cutting out junk food, fast food (really high in calories), prepared food (tv dinners and the like),and red meat really helps but you have to drastically change your eating habits. I went on a low fat/high fiber diet and lost all the weight I put on while taking Zyprexa.
