I have been very obese my entire life. The term for me is morbidly obese, and I don't know what it would be like to be thin.

Anyhow, I have been working hard to lose wieght since March. As one of the things I do to ward off depression I walk every day, and now that it is winter I have been going to the gym and walking on the treadmill. As of this morning I have lost 60 pounds, and I am the smallest now that I have been since I was a teenager. Everyone around me is very excited, but I just can't get excited about it. I keep saying "It is only a number". My psychiatrist told me that "It quit being just a number at 10 pounds. Anything more than that is an achievement." I feel no excitement or happiness about losing all this weight. I keep doing it because I don't want to die of a heart attack before I am 50. I am in a low point of depression, thinking that may be the reason I am so blah about the whole thing.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me to make me feel like I have accomplished something rather than just looking at numbers on the scale? I'd like to get excited, just can't seem to.

Hi Rehill,

I would suggest talking with your pDoc as it seems that you are having a hard time realizing any happiness or sense of achievement. I can say that you have achieve a lot, and I am sure that intellectually you know that. So bottom line is, whatever treatment for your depression that you are receiving is not enough right now. Meds don't usually blunt our emotions so if you know that you have accomplished a great deal, and don't feel some sense of achievement, then something is wrong. Talk with your doctors...

Peace and Love... wayne

You feel like you feel. You can't help it and you don't have to be excited about it, but at least you're still doing it. I've lost 10 pounds. Not really trying and it's like, "Whatever". I don't want to be excited because you can only go so far anyway. Some hit anorexia or whatever when they just want to keep going. I've cut down because I want to, but I'm not willing to give up junk altogether. I also exercise what I love to do and that keeps me occupied on average a few hours a day. Just keep doing what you're doing and at least you have a reason to do it. You care about your health enough to do it. Many aren't that willing. That's good. Praying for you.

Rehill, losing 60lbs is downright amazing! Whatever you're doing, keep doing it because you clearly have a strong will and mind. Don't worry about getting excited about it, you don't have to! It's not about excitement, it's about knowing. Knowing that you can, knowing that you have, knowing that you will. It's about having the belief that you can accomplish your goals, and you have already proven your capability.

As for your weight-loss journey, I'd advise eating lots and lots of fruit. I especially enjoy fruit smoothies. You're not going to get fat from fruit, your body will thank you for all the nutrition, and it's very good for your digestion. This society is so conditioned to eat either strait-carbs or meat, bouncing between extremes of one or the other. Fruit doesn't have to be a side, it can be a main part of your diet! I know it's improved my digestion and health quite a bit.
