My son started to develope a rash on his arms yesterday. By the time he got out of school today it was a raised, blistery type rash all over his hands up to his shoulders. I called the pdoc who instructed me to take him straight to ER. He had blood test, was looked at by several people and all think it is the lamictal rash. So no more lamictal for him. He had to get a shot of steroids and benedryl. He has to keep taking benedryl until the rash is gone. He has been on Lamictal since the end of Febuary so who would have thought he would get a rash now. Just goes to show you that it can happen anytime. If you get a rash and you are on lamictal, see your doctor!!!

My husband is on Copaxone for multiple sclerosis, and he had taken it for probably a year or two before he developed an allergic reaction to it (raised patchy, red itchy rash blothces on his arms and torso). He took benadryl with his daily shot for several months and then had no more problems with it. Allergic reactions can be very dangerous though...not something to mess around with! I watched him closely until it seemed to pass, and if he'd had any kind of swelling of the face or neck he'd have been in an ambulance faster than you can blink!

Anyway, I wanted to mention this because you can definately become reactive to a medicine even if you've been taking it for a long time, something I wasn't aware of until then. I'm glad they figured out your son's problem and it's being taken care of! Benadryl is good stuff, isn't it? smile.gif

I too had always thought after you reached your target dose and were at it awhile it wouldn't happen. I was proved wrong. I am on Lamictal too. I have been on it for some time though.
He is sleeping well tonight. smile.gif

Killi,
I'm glad your husband is ok. Who would have thought of an allergic reaction to a med you have taken so long?!
Yes benedryl and steriods are wonderful meds for this type of reaction. Just minutes after getting his shot of both my son was itch free. Coopclapping.gif

Lynn, I'm sorry to hear about your son. That must have been really scary but glad to hear that he's doing okay now. I'm actually starting on Lamictal soon and the doc told me that if I make it through the first 2-3 weeks without the rash that I'd be fine....guess he's wrong.

Lynn, steroids are another miracle drug! Although they can be awful while you're on them (for more than just one shot like your son had). My husband couldn't walk one time with an MS relapse, and he got started on IV corticosteroids and within a day he could walk again! It seems they don't affect adults quite as bad as kids, but kids can get pretty evil while on steroids from what I hear. :tounge: The benefit they give is amazing though, and you always know it's just the steroids talking. ranting.gif innocent.gif Coopwink.gif

I am glad he's doing better so quickly! Sorry you had to have such a scare though. hugs.gif

Hi nO1,
Dont worry to much about the rash. It was just one of those freak things. I am on lamictal too and have had no problems.
People wo have skin problems such as exema are more likely to get it. Wouldnt you know my son has exema patches here and there on his body. He uses a special RX cream for them.

I'm not too worried over the rash. If I get it, just hope that it's not too bad, get it treated, and I just stop taking it. It has to feel horrible though to be on it for so long, have it working for you, and then have to stop. If I was to have an allergic reaction to it, I' rather have it early on when I'm still not sure if the med is working--that way I don't know what I'm missing.
