Ignoring suicide heightens stigma of mental illness

I am writing regarding a small news item in the June 11 edition of the Sunday Rutland Herald and Times Argus that noted, "Hartford police have a long time policy of not identifying suicide victims." We will know that we have overcome our deep discrimination against a mental illness such as major depression for what it is — an illness, like any other, which can be severe enough to sometimes result in death — when we no longer believe we have to hide suicide as a shameful secret. my dad committed suicide in may '04.
my family was so ashamed and wanted to cover it up. right away, they started spreading the lie that it was a heart attack. well, i was the one who found him on the floor dead and who read his suicide letter and saw the pill bottles everywhere, so of course i knew this was a farce.

i was the one who arranged his service. i asked the minister to NOT ignore the elephant in the middle of the room- we needed to address suicide and the waste of a beautiful life.

we all fight the stigma of MI everyday. this was just another way for me to counter it.

In tribute to my dad, BP1 suicide.

"She sits in a corner by the door...there must be more I can tell her. If she really wants me to help her, I'll do what I can to show her the way, and maybe one day I will free her. But I know, no one can see through her. Lisa, Lisa, sad Lisa, Lisa..."
