I took antidepressants for a number of years, finally settling on Prozac. After coming off them for about a year, I was at 225 pounds (from around 170 when I entered college 10 years ago). I actively worked to lose 65 pounds in the last year so I'm now at 160. I've been experiencing what may be a relapse of depression, some minor OCD and anxiety, so I may need to go back on them (I'll be talking with my doctor).

Has anyone taken Prozac and not gained considerable weight? I'm not talking about a couple of pounds -- that can be attributed to diet. And I'm not talking about "my appetite has increased, therefore I'm eating more and gaining more weight" or "I'm more tired now so I don't exercise as much". I'm talking just taking the drug and gaining weight.

Prozac had no effect at all on my weight . Maybe being depressed makes us less active , and in search of those calorie rich comfort foods . Try reviewing your diet , more fresh foods such as veg and fruit , water instead of sodas !
Easy to say I know.

Good luck . Hedge

i didnt gain weight the first 2 times i was on prozac,in fact i lost weight the first time i was on it,which i put down to feeling better and not comfort-eating.

i have gained weight in the 3 weeks ive been on it this time but i am also coming off effexor at the same time so untill i am completely off that and it is out of my system i wont really know if the prozac has anything to do with that.

I've been on prozac for just over three months and haven't gained weight - the nausea it caused me at first made me lose some weight instead. But I don't think the medication itself has caused my weight to change (fingers crossed!) so far, anyway.

Hi,

I have been on ads for 20 years and have put on 20 pounds (thats a pound per year0.
I do find myself eating a lot more now so I know it is my fault but it is still better than
the depression. Best wishes to you,

starr

ive had other side effect on prozac but its made no difference to my weight at all. in a way i hoped i would put on weight because im underweight so it would have helped there. i have gotten nausea from taking it so that has affected my eating habits slightly but not enough for any noticeable difference in weight or anything like that.

OK this is the topic I REALLY need advice AND glad to hear that prozac isn't causing weight gain...today,my doctor wants to combined the 400 mg of wellbutrin that I am already taking with 10mg of prozac I have battled bulima/anorexia most of my life ...I told him I feared weight gain (paxil puffed me up and it was a total nightmare....not to mention the withdrawal symptoms) he told me that in all the patients he has prescribed paxil to, no one has gained weight...
so this is true for the most part with people? unsure.gif unsure.gif I am afraid to start taking it

No weight gain at all after more than three weeks. Initial loss of appetite when I forced myself to eat. Need to go to the bathroom more often if anything. I was skinny in the first place and still am - could actually do with putting on a few pounds.

I have increased my dosage to 40 mg and did gain 15 lb. It is as if I crave food more than before. I am not exercising at all but I suspect the medication has slowed down my metabolism ? In any case, it helped with the depression, so no regrets.

If i took prozac and gained weight i would become more depressed than I already am...and the irrational, destructive past behavior of bulima and anrorexia may come up again..i don't think I could take the chance of my metabolism stopping again like it did with paxil 6 years ago..
this isn't good..so it's like the rest of my life i have to take an anti-depressant cocktail? and every couple of years I have to switch them around because they stop working?
what does this re-arranging of the brain do to people in the long run?
my doctor told me I was too sensitive and emotional and that prozac may give me the thicker skin I need
but I am still afraid to start them...i don't want such a thick skin that i can't fit into my jeans anymore!

I've been taking 20mg a day for 6 1/2 weeks now and havent gained any weight. I still havent got much of an appetite though so i'm not really eating properly. I'm about 2 stone underweight, i've been skinny all my life so if anything i could do with gaining a bit of weight.

well i have quit the stuff cold turkey now(4 days sofar) as i just couldnt shift the weight i gained, which i put down to the effexor but it happened when i stared the prozac so i dont know.all i know is i was eating healthy, excersising loads, and the weight wouldnt shift, even though it always has done in the past with no problems.

my doctor said my diet was the problem,as i have also been constipated the whole time ive been on meds-which was almost 2 years this time-and i couldnt 'go' without using lactulose daily and sometimes laxatives when it got really bad.i had never had contipation problems when not on meds, but my doctor insisted it wasnt the prozac.

how strange then that after just 2 days off it suddenly i am reglaur as clockwork again without taking anything to help...

I don't think that I have gained any real weight from the Prozac itself... I do think that I eat more (carbs and at night...) when I am stressed or anxious though. So when I am feeling good I eat less.... so I would say no, not from Prozac but my weight does go up/down 5# depending on my moods...

I have used Prozac for 13 years and it seems to be the only AD I can tolerate because of my weight issues. I take between 20 and 60 mg., and go on 4 week prozac "holidays" so that I don't become tolerant. It hasn't affected my weight either way - I still gain and lose.

I think prozac does not affect my weight or helps me decrease weight. but I have been quite slim all my life and have had no significant weight problems. I´ve been on 20mg for 5 weeks.

well i have just gone back on it now after a month off as i just wasnt coping.my digestive problems returned with PMS so i am now thinking my doctor was right and the problems were cycle-related rather than caused by the prozac.

my weight didnt change in the 4 weeks but i seemed to be eating more, probably because i was feeling so bad.

I have been on several AD's since about age 16, I have yet to notice any darastic increase that I can attribute to the AD's. I've been on the Prozac for about a year now, and have not noticed a change at all. If anything I have lost weight b/c i have more energy to go do things.
