QUOTE FDA Approves First Generic Bupropion Hydrochloride Extended-Release Tablets The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today approved the first generic version of Wellbutrin XL (Bupropion hydrochloride) Extended-Release Tablets, which are indicated for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD). The approval is an important step in the agency's effort to increase the availability of lower-cost generic medications. In 2005, Wellbutrin XL was the 21st highest-selling brand-name drug in the United States, with sales totaling $1,326,323,000 as reported in the online magazine Drug Topics.
"This approval is another example of our agency's efforts to increase access to safe and effective generic alternatives as soon as the law permits," said Gary J. Buehler, Director, Office of Generic Drugs. "Bupropion hydrochloride is a widely used antidepressant, and its generic version can bring significant savings to the millions of Americans with depression."
The economic benefits of FDA's generic drug approval program are significant because generic drug products, which are used to fill over 50 percent of all prescriptions, frequently cost a fraction of the price of the brand-name drugs. The Office of Generic Drugs reviews and takes action on generic drug applications, and the same thorough and rigorously scientific review standards of safety, efficacy and quality are applied to generic drug applications as are applied to new drug application. Consumers and health professionals can be assured that an approved generic drug is bioequivalent to a brand name drug and is its equal in dosage form, strength, and route of administration, quality, performance characteristics, and intended use.
FDA received a citizen petition (a formal request for FDA action) that asked FDA to consider several issues for bupropion hydrochloride extended-release tablets, including how similarly the drug is absorbed into the bloodstream. After reviewing the issues raised in the petition, FDA determined that its standards for approval of the generic drug application for bupropion are appropriate.
Bupropion Hydrochloride Extended-Release Tablets, 150 mg and 300 mg are manufactured by Anchen Pharmaceuticals Inc, of Irvine, CA. SOURCE:- www.fda.gov/bbs

My meaningfulness is in the here and now. It is enough that I may be of value to someone today. It is enough that I make a difference now." ~Lindsay Hotlines

Thanks for posting that article! I got my prescription filled a couple weeks ago and they gave me generic this time. I've only been on Wellbutrin for 4 months and didn't know there was a generic available. The other nice thing about the generic is that I had NO copay!! That about knocked me over. I don't know why that is but I'll take it! I had a check up appointment last week and the dr said that generics can be a lower dose than brand name but still within the requirements. And that if I noticed anything different, we could look at the dosage. So far, I can't say I can tell the difference.

QUOTE (dondi2538 @ Jul 30 2007, 06:41 PM) I am also taking the budeprion xl 300mg by Teva. According to my receipt from the pharmacy, I paid 30.92 and the insurance covered 92.75. it seems to work just fine. Interesting, mine is a unusual bottle and its made by Apotex Corp. I take 100mg twice a day and it has a 100 score in the pill with "bup" writing above it, on the other side says "apo" and its purple.

I'll introduce myself when I get a chance (new puppy - what possessed me)?! I have tried the generic Wellbutrin twice and both times have had to go back to the brand. Unfortunately, cause it's much more expensive. If you google Wellbutrin and generic problems, I'm far from the only one. Best to all!

I was changed over to the the generic and everything is coming back again after about 4 or 5 months on it I was irritable and my wife said she didnt care she wanted me back on the real stuff and I can tell you their is a difference. My brain was starting to feel like everything was running together on 300 generics. I feel all the same effects as I felt when I was originally put on wellbutrin years ago again and it doesnt seem to be clearing up this time. I got mad and decided not to take any of it Bad Idea now I am trying to get my system back on it I dont want to be around anyone my kids included I just want to hide. and not do anything. I am making an appointment to go back to the Dr. and see what he can do I am going to college full time and cant even pay attention long enough to do one assignment.
