I've been diagnosed with depression, and i've been on effexor for about 6 months (before that it was prozac for several years). anyways, at one point in my treatment I took Wellbutrin briefly and I ended up hving a manic response to it. i got really hyper and super efficient among other things. I'm not bi polar, but the doc says there's a risk of mania with certain types of meds. my doc just increased my dosage of effexor from 112.5 to 150. i'm wondering if anybody has experienced medication induced mania? i'm a bit nervous to increase my dosage because of this, but short of taking a mood stabilizer (which i don't want to do because i'll gain weight) this is the only route to go to help me get out of this slump i'm in.

I've noticed mania on Efexor, and i'm currently coming off of it. I've never been bipolar or anything but in the last couple of months on Efexor I notice highs and lows.

The highs i'm feeling on top of the world, i'm loud, fast, swearing... which is me to an extent but way more amplified.

Efexor can make you seem bipolar, as my doctor was explaining, it can also bring out bipolar if you have it. I'll soon know seeing as i'm coming off it now.

I'm up to 300mg of effexor every morning and I too get an induced mania from it which is why I'm on Avanza and Seroquel at night to help me sleep. Without them I'd be running marathons till i collapsed. On the otherhand I don't mind taking the extra meds to help me sleep because the effexor has been amazing for me.

The combination of all three has saved my life, so I really don't mind.

I'm now full of beans during the day and I get a good 4 or 5 hours sleep a night which is all i seem to need. Although waking at 3 or 4am still sucks...

Yup. Efexor was my start out of depression and into a manic phase. I'm bipolar 1. So Efexor didn't cause my bipolar, but it triggered my current mania. Thank heavens it did, as I was now finally diagnosed, with hope for the right treatment.

I'm still on XR 75mg, but now with 4 other psych meds.

Thats really interesting, does effexor cause mania or mania like symptoms if you don't suffer from bi-polar? It may explain why my doc has me on 200mg of seroquel at night. But he's never said I'm bi-polar.

so i ended up increasing my dosage from 112.5 to 150 on friday, and i'm not sure if i'm getting manic symptoms or not... my doc told me to pay attention to signs because i'm at risk of medication induced bi-polar. i really don't want to go there (depression is bad enough thank you very much)

- my thoughts are racing
- i can't seem to stay focused
- i've got more energy
- my heart beat is way faster
- i'm feeling confident and efficient (maybe this is what 'normal' feels like?)

maybe i'm just being overly cautious, but is this a warning sign? i'm going to call my doctor on monday, but i don't know if I should continue taking the higher dosage till then or stick with the original lower dosage.

I have heard that after increasing the dosage you can experience those symptoms for a few days then everything should settle down. I guess if the symptoms persist then see what the doc says.

I'm really curious about the fact that maybe if the mania doesn't settle down, there is a possibility that I'm bi-polar? Because I need the Avanza and Seroquel at night to even things out and get a decent sleep...

Interesting....
