I do.

We shouldn't really.

Speak to your Dr see what they say. Theres a difference between a few beers or wine and getting out of your skull on spirits. I have a few glasses of wine in the house, I don't go clubbing until 4am drinking shooters and cocktails (any more lol)

I was & I am not anymore. I noticed if I drink & party like I used to pre-'zac (few beers & some shots), I black out now and have a horrible anxiety ridden hangover that lasts two days. The last couple of times before I put two & two together were pretty darn scary but luckily I had my friends & husband there to get me home and make sure I was safe. I don't remember ANYTHING and was even wondering if someone had dosed me with something. It has been well over twenty years since I had a drinking induced black out. Those college days have been long gone!!

I'm on 40mg now and the drinking - other than a social beer or two - is no more. Waking up not knowing how you got home, what happened and the hangover/anxiety attacks I was getting was not fun.

I forgot to mention the mystery bruises too!

There seems to be something about some SSRI's that intensify alcohols' effects - at least that's what I eventually discovered with me. I know everyone is different but I would absolutely take it easy on the boozin' until you know what to expect.

I used to drink a little when on fluoxetine, and a lot when not on any meds, but I have now decided to totally stop drinking altogether - hopefully the first of many positive moves!

I used to find even with a few drinks, my sleep was very disrupted, and had awful nightmares. It also made me feel 'weird' and very negative.

I have a beer or two sometimes, occasionally 4 or 5. No real problem, but I doubt it helps, especially if I have a drink more than one day in a row. I know I shouldn't drink at all but then I'm basicallyn robbed of my social life. I know there's more to life than drinking etc, and I do do things that don't involve it, but I really enjoy a couple of social beers. If i stop altogether then it's just one more thing I used to enjoy that my life has been robbed of. Stupid pills.

Thats a lot how I feel atm, being robbed of one of the few things I enjoy, but i'm realising the strange effects I have the morning after I drink don't happen if I don't drink. taz.gif Making my life feel very dull right now, and the prospect of never being able to have a good night out again is weighing heavy on my mind.

I drank alcohol a couple of days ago, and got drunk pretty quickly after not that much. I woke up with the worst hangover yesterday and today I feel horrendous, really down and horrible. I'm on day 8 of the prozac, and up until then I felt amazing and rejuvinated and fantastic. I don't know if it was the alcohol or whether it was just a placebo effect that wore off but i won't be doing it again for a while..

I used to drink while on Prozac. My experience doing so negated the benficial effect of Prozac entirely. Depression set in quickly due to consuming alcohol. It took close to a week before Prozac reached the therapeutic level. Do not drink while taking Prozac or any AD. It's not in your best interest to interfere with the workings of your medications.

really not trying to spark an argument here, just a level headed discussion -

surely it makes more sense to advise the situation rather than ignore it?
personally, im 19 and really struggle not being able drink, and still do sometimes, because i think i would be worse off if i had to miss out on part of my youth entirely. i would love to be able to discuss it, but i feel there is a real lack of support here. we shouldn't do it but we cant be the ones that do.

Seems a legitimate enough question that really needs to be addressed. Would having a drink or two be considered "alcohol abuse"??? I've been wondering about this question of my social drinking too, since starting on prozac.

Yeah, I was on the "Pro" for 8 months and I can tell you, drinking was a very bad idea. I would only have one or two drinks and not actually feel drunk, but throw up and get very sick. It was very embarrassing because the first time I did it was at a party and I didn't know what would happen. Then everyone thought I was a serious lightweight sigh.gif I tried it again a couple times later, but had the same effect. Also, it made me unable to have orgasms and didn't really help my depression, so basically it was terrible. I'm doing a lot better on Mirtazapine now.

Yeah I'm on prozac and have been for a few years, and a month and a half ago finally decided to stop drinking. It's a bummer, because I'm fairly young (in my mid-20s) and so many social activities involve (or often times even revolve around) drinking, so I feel like I'm pushing myself even further away from being social, which is obviously unhealthy. But my therapist convinced me it is for the best, and so I'm trying it out for the forseeable future. I have to admit, I prefer a life without much drinking, but yeah it is tough just because it's such a part of our culture, especially it you want to go out and meet people and be active in the evenings... : /

for the first couple of months of prozac i didn't drink anything then started having the odd beer every weekend and felt realy depressed the next day..

so i stopped for a bit.. now ive been on prozac for about 7 months and have quite alot of beer at the weekend like every teenager does's and it

does'nt seem to react with the prozac as much as the first attempt just get an hangover like every else.. but i wouldn't really advise drinking myself

because sometimes it can have a relly bad effect for a few days after.. thing is tho all my mates do is drink so if i don't go out then ill basically have

no mates.. just go work all week then sit in house all weekend over n over agen.. so i choose to drink and am happy to take the consequences..

Maybe I can help if anyone is still curious. I take Fluoxetine (20mg) everyday and I drink a large amount. I don't have blackouts, but sometimes my drunks get very emotional when I'm alone. As long as I'm still with people drinking and partying I'm perfectly fine. I can still handle a lot of alcohol, so it hasn't impeded my ability to drink, but just watch for those emotional nights when you wind up alone, they are painful.

QUOTE (lambvet @ Jul 6 2007, 05:16 AM) *
To Whom It May Concern,

No one has really posted here for quite a bit but a lot of research has broached this problem since.

1.) SSRIs increase the desire to drink.

2.) The metabolism of alcohol and most psych meds do not mix well, and mostly interfere with one another, leading to increased concentrations of both. They usually use the same enzyme systems in the liver and are considered competitive inhibitors.

3.) The use of alcohol increases suicide ideation, with or without psychiatric medications, although higher with psych meds especially in teenagers.

4.) Prolonged alcohol use causes depression and other psychiatric conditions, like delusions, anxiety, delirium and psychosis. (this is not a new one)

Those are just a few of the reasons why people with MH issues should not drink. It may offer temporary relief, but that relief only occurs while under the influence of alcohol and only in the earlier stage of alcohol use. As use excelerates, depression usually becomes a part of the drinking experience, as any alcoholic will tell you.

And if you drink because you have a problem, consider this, while you are drinking, the problem doesn't get addressed and the next day the problem still exists. And if the problem is time related, you have just lost another day to solve it.

BE Peace and BE Love..... wayne

On top of all this your doctor has the right to refuse you AD's if they know you are drinking at all. Is it really worth the risk. I have been the person who tried to end it from mixing. It is so silly to worry about having one night of fun compared to being happy and healthy. I could have ended up a vegtable hooked up to machines for the rest of my life just because I wanted to have a good time. NOT. So many things can easily go wrong so fast you won't know it happened.

Please heed this advise, 1 or 2 drinks isn't worth hyour life.

I do. Not as often as I used to..mainly due to growing up a bit, loss of friends to uni and the terrrrrrrrrible hangover you get the next day.
But I may as well share my experience with Prozac + alcohol.

I tend to get very drunk, very quickly and then suddenly I'll sober up. And of course become I am stupid I will keep drinking and drinking and suddenly I'll be so drunk that I have to be taken home. The next day is pretty depressing but whilst drinking I am far far too happy.
I think it's something you have to get used to on Prozac. You'll have a few bad experiences but once you know how to, I guess, re-adjust your drinking habits to compensate for the prozac, all will be well.

I can drink on prozac but I do find that I have to stay at my boyfriend's or a friend's house to make sure I'm feeling okay the next morning, cause as soon as I'm on my own it's downhill. :/

Hope you find any of that rant useful!

I have been taking prozac pretty much for last 11 years and have most usually taken 60 mg, I drink the same as i always have done, far too much at times, but I dont feel any different to the times I have drunk when not on prozac.

Strange to hear people on here say it makes them alot worse, but everyones different!

I was told by my doctor to NEVER drink on prozac - although now I'm not sure if thats cos I was under the drinking age at the time. Reading this topic seems that just don't drink much is the answer... I gather it's ok to have say a glass of wine or something? It's really annoying to have to keep saying 'I don't drink' when at a wedding/party etc, and then people think you don't like alcohol and are against it... and get all worked up.

I'm not a big drinker, never have been. I use to drink about 4-5 drinks max, on prozac it has turned into 3 max. I find that prozac about doubles the effect of alcohol for me. I can have one drink and be tipsy. I like having a glass of wine or a cocktail with dinner every once in awhile. I've mentioned it to my doctor and though not very approving, she did not disapprove of a drink or two.

"If I could tell the world just one thing
It would be that we're all ok
And not to worry because worry is wasteful
and useless in times like these
I will not be made useless
I won't be idled with despair
I will gather myself around my faith
for light does the darkness most fear
My hands are small, I know,
but they're not yours they are my own
but they're not yours they are my own
and I am never broken "
