I took celexa about four years ago for panic and depression and did well on it. I was off for several months,, had a melt down and needed to go back to something so tried lexapro. I like the reduced side effects but it just isn't cutting my depression like the celexa did. Has anyone else had this experience? Is it even possible since they are basically the same?

to answer your questions..... Yes and Yes.

Gota give Lexapro time, it helped with my anxiety a little at 10mg and mininal for my depression at that dosage.  I slowly increased to 15mg then to 20mg and it took a couple months or so, but DEFINITELY a big difference at 20mg.  I basically have NO DEPRESSION or Anxiety anymore.

I was on Celexa and decided to try Lexapro because of the less side effects.  The lexapro did wonders for my anxiety, but when it came to the depression it hardly did anything.  I was on 30mgs for over three months.  So here I am back on Celexa and doing so much better.  I know it seems weird since they are suppose to be so much alike.

Hey Gina,

I kind of had/am having a similar experience.  Read on.  Sorry it is a book.  Thought I would give background.

I was on Celexa for 1 1/2 years, starting in August 2001.  It did help initially.  I was a huge mess when I first started it--crying all the time, sleeping 13 hours, and had so much anxiety that I only left the house to go to work.  But it got me back on track, no crying and anxiety gone, back to participating in other activities, and able to go to work.  But my emotions felt flat.  No highs, no lows.  Just blah!!  And no laughing.  I couldn't laugh--I could smile, but that is it!

So I went off the Celexa b/c it was not helping and I was sad, unmotivated, blah, lethargic.  I started a slide into depression even on Celexa so I stopped taking it, and 10 months later I ended up back where I started.  Crying ALL THE TIME, sleeping for the whole weekend, and basically only leaving the house to go to work.  I gained about 15 pounds which is a lot since I am only 5'3".

So October 2003 I ended up back in a therapists office crying uncontrollably.  Later that month I started Lexapro.  The anxiety definitely lessened and I did not feel that everyone was staring at me, so I felt okay to go to the library, or the store.  So I started at 10 mg Lexapro, then 20 mg (which I was told is barely therapeutic), and then 30 mg.  So my anxiety is gone and I am back to 20 mg Lexapro, because I really noticed no difference between 20 and 30.  The only problem I have now, are I have no emotions.

I FEEL DULLED!  I am not deeply sad, nor am I happy.  And I still have not laughed.  AND I HAVE NO ENERGY, MOTIVATION, PASSION, or DRIVE and it SUCKS!!  ALL I WANT TO DO IS STAY IN BED!!  It is now mid Jan 2004 and I thought Jan. 2004 might be promising, since my 2003 was horrible!  I am now 15 pounds heavier since Oct. probably b/c I was getting a milkshake everyday from a fast food joint, and I don't even eat fast food!!  So I am now 30 pounds over weight, had to buy bigger clothes and I feel worse than ever.  I AM JUST SO SAD!  I AM THE ZOLOFT COMMERCIAL!

My doctor gave me Wellbutrin to give my energy a lift.  A boost he called it.  I have been on the Wellbutrin only 6 days now.  And I just am not feeling optimistic!  I am tired of this rollercoaster ride!  Everyone else just seems so happy, and can laugh!  ALL I WANT IS TO BE THE GIRL I USED TO BE!  I have not seen her in years now!  The energetic, fun, upbeat, friendly, happy, carefree, kind, outgoing girl who was ready to conquer the world!  I miss her!

DOES ANYONE ELSE FEEL LIKE THIS?  Yesterday I had a great day, today I am bummed!  I hate this!

I apoligize for being such a downer, but I can't help it!  Suzy

I am at 15 mg lexapro right now. I reduced from 20mg. I am having a really hard time sleeping and thought reducing the dose might help. If I take my lexapro in the morning, 75mg of seroquel at night and 30mg of restoril, I sleep and after a few days feel really good. When I try to stop the restoril, I sleep poorly and start to get depressed and anxious again. I just seem to remember feeling happier on celexa, but the lexapro does have less sexual side effects and at least so far I'm not gaining weight on it like I did on celexa. I am sure my Dr. would let me go back to celexa, but I just don't know if its the right thing to do or not. I just want to be normal again, whatever that is. The title of a book I saw once said "Normal is Just a Setting on Your Dryer"

Suzy,
I know Exactly what you mean and what you're going through... STICK WITH THE WELLBUTRIN.  It is going to take a lot longer unfortunately for Wellbutrin to kick in, but it will totally give you the ENERGY and happiness you are looking for.  It might take A FEW MONTHS.... Yes, that long.... so try to stick it out.  How many MG are you on?  I just switched from the SR to the new XL version only 150mg and that is enough to help battle the Lethargy and no emotions I get from the Lexapro.  Good Luck.... oh, and by the way, who told you that 20mg of Lexapro is barely therapeutic??  I find that hard to believe.  I don't think 10mg is enough for most people, 15 or 20 seems to work.... but 30mg seems like a lot.  Anyway, just curious if it was a pdoc that told you that.  thx

Gina,
I can only sleep 5-6hrs a night AT THE MOST.  Don't know if its the Wellbutrin or the Lex.  I even take Trazadone at night to knock me out.... but I still have a lot of energy during the day, despite the lack of sleep.  I try and take naps during the day if I can.  And meditate.... I feel a little wacky if my day gets busy.

Hi Everyone,

i have a question about Celexa, i just started taking it this week (20mg) because lately , ive been feeling really down. I broke up with my girlfriend a few months ago and im a pretty shy guy. One huge problem with my depression is i have no interest in anything pretty much, i was wondering for those who have been taking Celexa, do you notice a difference with being interested in things again? It just feels like i only want to say what i want and dont want to hear other peoples stories    i really want to get this out of me because im going to start losing my close friends, has anyone whos been taking Celexa with a similiar problem noticed it helped them?

Thanks everyone,

Civic

Hi Ronnie,

I can't speak for Suzy, but my p-doc definitely told me that a therapeutic dosage of Lexapro is usually 20-40mg. I was kind of surprised too, because it seemed like 10-20mg was a standard dosage, but my p-doc made it very clear that in his view a typical therapeutic dosage is 20-40mg. I had been concerned about raising my dosage from 20mg to 30mg, but after talking to him, I felt very comfortable making the jump to 30mg. I'm not taking Lexapro anymore, because after a couple of months on, the benefits became very subtle even at 30mg, so I decided to see if I can find something more effective for me.

Hey Civic,

Welcome to the forum.

I haven't tried Celexa yet, but I was on Lexapro, which is claimed to be very similar to Celexa for most people. Lexapro was developed by isolating the most effective part of the Celexa molecule. Lexapro has been shown in clinical trials to be about as effective at 10mg as Celexa is at 40mg and with potentially fewer side effects.

I can definitely relate to your feelings of being uninterested in what's going on around you, your usual activities, and having conversations with other people. That certainly sounds like typical depression to me. I felt very much that way before I began taking Lexapro about five months ago.

A few weeks after beginning, and after upping my dosage to 20mg, I started to feel more relaxed and I was able to enjoy the moment. I started to feel surges of warm emotion sometimes when I talked to people, which really caught me by surprise. I was much more at ease with people and I was suddenly very interested in making conversation with both friends and strangers.

I wish I could tell you it continued this way indefinitely, but unfortunately the benefits faded for me after a couple of months, even after raising the dosage to 30mg for a while. I was still benefitting from the Lexapro, but it had become fairly subtle and I decided to try some other medication options to see if I can find something even more effective. Lexapro was the first anti-depressant I had ever tried, so I thought it was worth shopping around a bit more.

Both Celexa and Lexapro can definitely have a very positive impact for a lot of people with depression symptoms like those you described. It may take several weeks and your doc may need to raise the dosage to achieve a more noticeable effect. And if Celexa doesn't turn out to be an effective med for you, there are plenty of other options to try. I'm sure you'd like to be better right away, but unless you're really lucky, it may take some patience. But it's great that you've taken those first steps toward feeling yourself again! Good luck to you!

Thanks for the comment DarkBlue,

It's such a horrible feeling being depressed in general, i've never heard of lexapro until coming here, do you think i should stick out using Celexa for a few weeks then try Lexapro? One noticeable side-effect ive noticed so far is im more tired and dry mouth, i tried taking Prozac about 3 months ago for 2 weeks and that was the WORST ive ever been in my entire life. Wasn't eating, horrible thoughts, couldn't communicate with anyone, 2 days after i stopped taking it i felt so much better. I just hope Celexa works out for me, i'm at a point in my life where i have-to focus and work hard, it's just hard doing these things while being depressed!

Thanks Again,

Civic

Civic,

In my opinion, which is of course not a professional opinion, I would continue giving Celexa a try. Although it is similar to Lexapro, everyone's brain chemistry is different. Some people seem to do better on Lexapro. But other people seem to do better on Celexa. For some, they act about the same.

Are you seeing a psychiatrist for meds or a general practitioner? I would advise a psychiatrist, since they will generally be much more familiar with the nuances of all the different meds. They will use their knowledge to prescribe meds which they suspect might be most effective, but since everyone's brain is different, the only way to really find out what works for you is to try the meds out.

Your p-doc will help you determine a good dosing schedule, and can usually tell you whether any side effects you're experiencing are common or unusual and whether they usually fade or not. They also may help you decide how long it is reasonable to keep trying a given med before possibly trying something new.

But with most p-docs, the process is essentially up to you and how you feel you're reacting to the meds. They'll try to help you through the process as effectively as possible and keep you safe. I feel that no matter how educated your p-doc's decisions or suggestions may be, it is important that you yourself understand his or her reasons. So if you feel unsure or have concerns about anything, be sure to ask questions.

I also feel that if you have begun taking a med, it's generally sensible to give it several weeks to be effective, as long as the side effects aren't intolerable. If it doesn't work well even after a couple of months, then at least you'll know that and won't ever have to take it again. Everyone wants to be better right away, but if they can think a little more long-term, it might be a lot less depressing. Most people do eventually find a med that works well for them. Some get lucky and it's the first or second med they try. Others spend years perfecting a cocktail of drugs which work together to treat their symptoms.

I really hope the Celexa works out for you too! If you're determined to conquer this depression, then you may want to try therapy as well. A combination of therapy and meds works well for a lot of people.

Wellbutrin has worked out well for my depression and energy. Maybe that's one you could try in the future if Celexa doesn't work out. If you have problems with anxiety, though, I wouldn't recommend it so much, at least not by itself, because it has increased my anxiety significantly. I've just added Zoloft to it which I hope will reduce the anxiety. Paxil was ineffective for me, but many people find it great for both depression and anxiety.

Basically the central point of this novel I've just written is that I understand how much depression sucks, but finding the right meds and conquering depression are a process, and with patience, most people eventually succeed. Best of luck to you, Civic!

Hi everyone,

Hope I can jump in here too.
I have been taking Lexapro for about a month at 10 mg. I didn't have nay side effects that were too bad besides those in the initmate dept. It does make feel a little ho hum.
My doctor suggested I could up the doseage to 20mg OR try Wellbutrin but be aware it could increase my anxiety.
I decided to up the Lexapro.
Today, I had to go in to the doctor for an unrelated issue and spoke to my doctor's partner.
She brought up the subject of my anxiety and how I was doing on the Lexapro. She suggested that I take 20 mg Celexa instead and add the lower does of Wellbutrin.
She said Celexa helps many who have anxiety over Lexapro.
anxiety is my main problem but I do now have mild depression.
She also said that my initmate life is important to be "whole"..she knows I am married..and suggested the Wellbutrin will help with intimacy & energy...
I am a little nervous about this ..I just want something to click and work..

Hi...
I was put on celexa and welbutrin and seemed to be doing good. Doctor then said to try lexapro since it is supposed to be an improvement over celexa. So I was on it for almost a year but didn't see any real good results.  About a week and a half ago I asked the doctor to put me back on celexa as I thought it helped me more than lexapro did.  Right now I am having a hard time with depression(wanting to sleep too much) I am wondering if the change in medicine is causing this depression.

I've been taking Celexa for about 2 weeks now, feeling a bit better but not as good as i want to feel. Still lose intrest easily and get irritated. Im upto 30mg's now, been at 30 for a week now. Should i stick with this dosage for a bit longer? Or should i maybe try 40....

PS: Im also taking this medication called Dexadrine in the mornings, it helps me stay more alert at work. Anyone else taking this?

Ok I am new to this too, so bear with me...

I am a mother of two girls (2 and 7weeks) and my problem has been post pardum depression.  With my first it was rather severe.  I took several different meds til I was put on Serzone.  It worked wonders--after 3months my Dr switched me to Celexa 20 mg because of the controversy over the liver problems on Serzone.  Felt fine took for 3 more months, slowly weened off and was fine.

Two yrs later after second baby had a more mild case od ppd but coupled with anxiety.  I have been on Lexapro this time, 2 weeks at 10 mg and 2 weeks at 20 mg.  STILL ANXIOUS!!!  How can Celexa have worked and Lexapro doesn't seem to be doing the trick?  Could the Serzone have helped so much that when I switched to Celexa I was already out of the woods?

Not sure what to do...  Stay a little longer on Lexapro, switch to Celexa or switch to Serzone!!!!  Anybody have any insight for me??

I really need to start feeling better, I have 2 beautiful little girls that need a "whole" mommy again.

I've been on Lexapro since last summer for depression and anxiety.  I never tried Celexa, but the lexapro did nothing that I could comment about for the anxiety.  I had to go on something for anxiety.  Iknow everyone is different.  I can say  that I'm not depressed anymore.  I'm also not even thinking about getting off the lexapro, either.  I felt foggy for months, too, but it does go away.  I get excited and laugh about stuff.  People who know me can't believe I'm still on an antidepressant, so apparently I'm acting like my old self.  I have to admit I feel tired at times.  If that is supposed to be the anxiety relief, they can have it.  I don't have panic attacks, but I also have Ativan, which I use less and less of. I was on a very low dose of Buspar, which is non-addictive.  I take all my meds at night and sleep like a baby!

I seemed to feel better on celexa. Lexapro worked fine for
a while, but the last few days I really seem to be depressed. I gained so much weight on celexa I don't want to take that again. I don't know what I'll do now if the lexapro has quit working.

Well, I made the switch back to Celexa 20 mgs  I am on my 3rd day and I THINK I feel more calm.  Sometimes I question if I am feeling better or not, Its like I almost forget what the "real me" is, or I wonder if I will just feel like this forever.  I can't even explain what I feel anymore--sometimes I feel better, others spacey, and still others I feel anxious...  Does this mean the meds are kicking in or that I am getting worse...  Does anyone else ever feel this confused???  I know I got better after I took the meds after my first baby, but I am trying to compair last time to this time--and there are too many different factors this time!!  Sorry to ramble

Hi Anxiousmommy.

I am also an anxious mommy with 3 children..ages 13,7 and almost 3.
I will be interested to know how you feel on Celexa after another week or so.
I have been taking Lexapro going on 2 months now. I started with 10mg now up to 20.
I feel a slight difference..alittle less anxious a little less depressed. Mainly I feel tired/a bit calmer.
I am sitting on the fence about what to do.
My docotr gave me the choice of adding Wellbutrin with the Lexapro, trying Celexa alone or with Wellbutrin. I have samples of Celexa and Wellbutrin and have not tried.
Good luck to you and let us know how it is going for you:)

Well, here are the three mommies.  I wonder about the Celexa, too.  Maybe it would cut my anxiety down, too.  I tried Buspar, got off of it and may go back on to see if it does anything.  I know if I take it in the day, it makes me feel real anxious about an hour after I take it.  Just what I need.                        Jackie

IF YOU CAN BELIEVE IT I SEE A HUGE DIFFERENCE ALREADY!  I woke up with a tiny bit of anxiousness--but my youngest hasnt felt well, and i was up with her several times.  Once I had a cup of coffee and took a shower, I was ready to go!!  I have felt pretty good the last couple of days besides that.  I will continue you to keep you posted and good luck to both of you!!!

Well hello,
Pardon me while I jump in here.
I am happily 30 years married, have 4 children, 3 grandchildren and am 48.  I had been on a tricyclic antidepressant called doxepin for over 12 years.  It is an old one and it took almost over 2 years of hospitals, therapy, etc.,etc., before all my doctors and I settled on this old-fashioned AD.  Last November, I started looking at the newer AD meds and thought I might try something new...a very scarey thing to do after what I had been through those years before.  My reasoning was all the side-effects present from taking doxepin...sexual side-effects, dry-mouth, carb. craving, pm drugginess.  I was at 225 mg. at night.  I since tried Effexor XL since last Nov. and have headed back into major depression and anxiety attacks...alas my chemicals are again unbalanced.  My husband noticed me heading downward before I did.  Anyway, I am off of the Effexor XL now, my doctor is going to try Lexapro.  I sure hope it works.  I have enjoyed reading the posts to gather information but do realize everyone's chemistry is so different.  I sure wish they could measure those chems in our brains and then come up with the best options to balance them all without all the trial and error, huh?!? Anyway, I do know I can always go back to the doxepin if all fails, but I sure would like to be over some of the side effects.  Well, anyway, that's my story!
Update... now, just for 3 days they have had me on Lexapro 10 mg.  They had me taking Klonopin at night but made me too, too drowsy.  Just wanting to know if any of you have had similar experiences with long term depression and treatment.  I'm really hopeful this Lexapro works.  Anyone have trouble sleeping on it?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Posted by: anxiousmommyandwife on Feb. 23 2004,09:20

Regarding the trouble sleeping:   yes, for the first couple of days on 10 mgs, then again for a couple of days on 20 mgs, and again when I switched to Celexa for a night or two...  But for me it went away after that.  Good Luck, it should get better.

Hi all moms:)

Anxiousmommy..thanks so much for the update regarding the Celexa. This is terrific that you feel better.
Did you say that you were taking this on its own or with something? Sorry if I have forgotten..since I turned 40..lol! that memory thing..
Jackie, how are things going? Are you thinking of trying Celexa?
I have a few tablets of Lexapro left. After this I need to make a decision...refill or I can try the Celexa I have. My prescription for Celexa is 10mg....now on 20mg with Lexapro.
Hi to the new mom/grandmom...
I have no trouble sleeping with Lexapro in fact it helps me to sleep. I now take it at about 1:00 in the afternoon.
Thanks all for the posts and feedback.
I have heard that Celexa, like Paxil can cause weight gain..any thoughts?

I've been on 30mg of Celexa now for about 3 weeks and i feel really good some days and so so other days, i defenetly feel better though, i talked to my doctor and he said gice it at least 4 weeks to kick in to its full potential. 10mg is a very very small dose. The average adult takes 20-40 mg, worse comes to worse, im going to try 40mg and see what happens.

Posted by: Jkm on Feb. 24 2004,07:07

Don't jump up to 40mg. on your own.  These meds work by slowly introducing them to your system.  Our systems react differently to meds. We're all different in how our bodies absorb things and detox our system.  Ask your doc first and go up slowly.   Jackie

Hi Civic,

I have a main doctor and he has a partner, a female. I saw her recently and let her know that I felt slight improvement on Lexapro and real troublesome side effects but just so -so.
She said in her experience with her female patients 10 mg of Celexa & the lower dose of WB ( I think it is 150) combo has worked well for many.
I have both of these but have not tried yet. I am almost out of Lexapro and will need to decide in the next couple of days what I will try.All I can do is try and see how it affects me.
I hope you continue to benefit in a positive way from the Celexa.

anxiousmommyandwife,
I felt better the first day I took celexa. It seemed to work really quick for me. The only problem I had was weight gain.
I did good on lexapro for a while, then I got depressed again,
but I wasnt getting enough sleep. I have been off it a few days now and sleep like a baby. I wonder if the lack of sleep
was causing the depression. After I catch up on my sleep I may try it again if (when) I start getting depressed. I wonder
too if I could just take it when I need it since I seem to notice
a different right away when I start taking it.

I have been on Celexa.  Celexa was awesome but it made me tired and FAT.  Now, I'm on Lexapro and I like it for now.  I've only been on it for a little while. I'm still getting the   fits now and then.  I have, however, been able to get things done that I haven't been able to do for a long time.  Zoloft I'm sure worked for some.  It didn't work for me.  I hope Lexapro works as well as celexa did.  Without making me fat.

Hi all,

I just posted under lexapro' then I noticed this.  I have been on lexapro for almost 9 weeks going from 10 to 40mg.  It did help with my depression but the anxiety only got worse.  I would have good days and then all of a sudden, I would have an anxiety attack.  My pdoc suggested trying celexa for a couple of weeks before we switched to another med altogether.  I usually respond very well to meds, but my gut instinct says the  lexapro is not the one for me.  I dont know if the dosage is too high and we raised it too soon, or if it just isnt going to work any better so here I am on my first day of celexa!

Some of your posts are very encouraging.  I would love to hear more since this change scares me!  It is so easy to say 'give it more time' but it is not easy to do (I am just tired of the rollercoaster ride).

Bebo,
I'm so sorry that the Lexapro didn't work out for you. I hope the switch to Celexa goes easily for you, and that it gives you some relief from the depression.
I don't recall if you're also on anti-anxiety medication - it might be worth discussing with your doctor, at least for temporary use while your body adjusts to the change in meds.
Wishing you well ---
Karen

Both efexor and celexa gave me busy long dreams.  So my doctor has prescribed a 'cleaner' drug, marketed in the UK as Cipralex [Lexapro].  I've taken 5 doses so far and can't feel any difference.  I want to sleep right now although I have been busy this morning.   Last night I was too tired to sleep and my mind kept racing.  I'm hoping that after a couple of weeks the dreams will be less and my motivation will pick up because I'm not sore tired.

You say Lexapro is marketed in the UK, is it marketed anywhere else? Let's say Canada??
