A GP thinks it's BP II

The Psych who saw me for 10 minutes says it's just anxious depression

I'm afraid to be treated for the wrong thing.

I have a Hx of Depression for about 5 years (on/off, mostly on)

There seem to be four levels of moods:
1. Black hole, I want to die, crying depression
2. Flat, whatever, I don't know what I want, not interested in anything
3. A little less flat, able to laugh at some jokes, presents well, starting to get agitated, repetitive movements
4. Can't sit still, I'm going crazy, irritable, not happy but occasionally 'excited', prone to speeding, agitated, grinding teeth

I was on Celexa for a year. The first night I took it I felt exhilarated, energetic, 'let's go for a run at midnight' kinda thing. Then I was kinda flat for a few weeks, then somewhat normal (like #3) for most of the rest of the year. The last few months on it I got super irritable, felt like I was going crazy, very restless (an extreme #4). I stopped it and 3 days after stopping it I felt 'better'. Back to 'somewhat normal'.

I was off meds for a few months and seemed to cycle between #2 and #3. Still functioning. Then the cycling got worse - #1 and #4, more severe and interfering more with my work and personal life. I'm on medical leave now to figure things out.

The GP started me on lamotrigine. I got a rash and had to stop.

The Psych saw me very soon after and prescribed me Paxil and Topomax. The first night I took them, I got the same feeling as when I took the Celexa. I'm worried it'll be the same pattern.

HELP.

First, I suggest that you continue the new meds for a few days and watch the side effects. If you keep getting the same feelings or they increase to the point of you not sleeping and doing things you wouldn't normally do, contact the psychiatrist and report that because these side effects may lead her/him to change your meds and/or to change your diagnosis.
Bipolar is often very difficult to diagnose. Sometimes it takes many years to get a correct diagnosis. You'll need to give a full medical history including your reaction to different meds, to help get a correct diagnosis.
We can not diagnose you here because we're a peer to peer forum. We can only give you observations based on experience.

I know I won't get a diagnosis off a forum. ;)

Just thought I might get some different insight, experiences, encouragement, that kind of thing.

Hi notanumber,

I do agree with Iowa on staying with the meds and keeping a journal type thing with you that when you are feeling certain ways during the day and what you were doing at that time in your mood swings or depression episodes then that will also help the pdoc in helping to diagnose you properly. Also with each med that you take and the side effects that you have with them would be helpful. Basically what I do is in case of an emergency I keep a list of all my many different meds and what they were prescribed for and the meds that i am allergic to or have very bad side effects. I also keep all of this on my pc to where if there are any changes then I can just make the changes on word and print it out for the update. I also try to keep a list of my hospital stays and the reasons for being in the hospital like surgeries and depression. this all may help you and your doctors.

Nurturing
As we plant the seeds for a flower bed, we must nurture those seeds by watering and weeding so that the flowers may become beautiful and strong. Without the nurturing they may whither away.
As we plant the seeds for our gardens to grow our foods, we must nurture those seeds with watering and weeding so that the garden may give plenty of the food we need. Without the nurturing we may go hungry.

As humans we have seeds planted within our hearts, souls and minds, those seeds must also be nurtured with tender love and care so that we may feel, see and think better. Like weeding the flowers and gardens we must also weed out the bad thoughts and feelings that we suffer with any type of illnesses. Give yourself some nurturing and let others support that nurturing in weeding out the bad seeds and replacing them with seeds of love and peace of mind, we all have right and the ability to see that the world is a beautiful sight just as the beauty within ourselves. By nurturing, we won't go hungry and whither away with our illnesses.
