They say that 10mg of lexapro is about 20mg of celexa. But I also read were it's 40mg not 20mg. I'am taking 5mg of lexapro. And was wondering would that be the amount be 10mg or 20mg of the celexa?

My understanding is that Lex is about 2x as potent, so it would be 10mg of Celexa...but I'm no expert...

Hi, lexapro is twice as strong as Celexa: (Citalopram)
So 5mg = 10mg
10mg = 20mg
20mg=40mg in reality the are the same SSRI drug. Lexapro is a purer drug with once component removed (isomer) it is billed as better than Celexa, but only people who have taken both
could tell you if they difference.!

Not much to add to your replies to this point, Lexapro in terms of ditribture is equal to 1/2 the dose of Celexa. IE 5mg = 10mg. The important thing to remember is Lexapro is an improved version of Celexa. Celexa is a mixture of R and S enantiomers of citalopram. Lexapro is just the S enantiomer of citalopram. Enantiomers are forms of molecules that are almost exactly the same but are "opposites." Depression research has shown that the S enantiomer of citalopram is much more active as an antidepressant than the R enantiomer, which is why Lexapro (just the S enantiomer) was developed. The anecdotal experience of PDocs suggests that Lexapro is somewhat more than twice as potent as Celexa. I know that 2x is logical because of the enantiomers, but even though r-citalopram doesn't work on depression it could be interfering with the s-citalopram in Celexa.

When I first started this journey 6 months ago, I was prescribed 10mg of Celexa. This was soon upped to 20mg. This was a disaster and I spent a few hours hiding in my closet - not fun. Weird thing is, I'm on 10mg of Lexapro now and I haven't experienced any of the side effects I had on Celexa. To me, they are completely different drugs.
