My doctor just recently diagnosed me as adhd inattentive. He said I could try a stimulant for my adhd if i would like, I told him I would think about it. Any suggestions on where to start. Which stimulant worked the best for you? Which had the least side effects? I know everybody reacts to medicines differently.

Please help:hmm:

Well, stimulants just made me worse. My counselor taught me some behavior modification and it usually works. BTW: I'm ADHD with inattention and hyperness.

I personally think Adderall XR has been the best stimulant for me. I tried Ritalin LA at different dosages and it was only partially effective. I also got annoying headaches while I was on it. I have been on the Adderall XR for 2 years now.

Good luck, you can always switch.

My son is on Adderall xr. His pdoc would not rx ritalin. He says there are to many side effects compared to the new drugs for ADHD.

Is Adderral a long term solution or is it only until the person's habits change? I mean is ADD a lifetime disorder that needs medical treatment forever? I fit all the symptoms and am going to counseling next week.

I'm also wondering if you think stimulant medication changes a person. I worked with someone who took Adderal and there was a big difference from when he was on it or off it. It seemed he was really impatient, snappy and arrogant when he was on it and then childish, mean, and i guess all over the place without it.

SH,
When it comes to ADHD/ADD, I'm a firm believer in meds being a last resort. I believe counseling and behavior modification helps me more than any med I was on. Yes, stimulants can have an effect on personality but they can be minimized with the right stimulant & dosage.

Adderall worked wonders for me, ritalin did nothing at all. I am still on regular adderall 60mg a day and its very effective for the add/adhd symptoms at least for me. I would be totally up a creek without it now knowing the symptoms can be contolled by medication.

I have been on Ritalin for 6 years. I started at 10 mg once a day and now I am on 20 mg twice daily with Ritalin SR. I haven't been on any other stimulant medications, except the Ritalin. I know I am both physically and mentally addicted to it. I should mention, I have no formal diagnosis of ADD/ADHD. I was prescribed Ritalin for extreme fatigue secondary to major depression. Anytime I don't take Ritalin, I get violently ill - I get the sweats, racing heart, anxiety, shakiness and I feel like I am going to die. Not a good feeling. Just thought I'd throw my two cents in ...

I was rx ritalin about 3 or 4 years ago and that didn't really work for me, just made me want more. I stopped taking that and anything until recently. I was in the army for 6 years and never really had to apply myself as much as I do now. I have recently got out of the military and found it hard to concentrate at work and during study for my certs/school. I am now taking adderall and notice a huge differance, with less side effects than the ritalin.

ive been on both adderal and ritalin( at different times of course). ritalin(methylphenidate) has harder side effects when the medicaion wears off. adderall(amphetamine) does not have the same "downfall" side effects that ritalin does in my experiences.

both can be very addictiing though.
