My younger brother has dealt with panic attacks, and some relatively mild/moderate bouts of depression.
My father had some major episodes of depression and some anxiety problems, but was never officially diagnosed (that I know of - shhh! those kinds of things weren't spoken of in the days of Ozzy and Harriet).
My mother has had relatively mild/moderate bouts of depression, but prefers to be "strong" and not admit to or treat them when they occur.
My older brother is "normal" LOL. I think there was a switch made in the hospital when he was born.

We're all on the depressed side:  My Father and oldest brother are on antidepressants, my Mother is on a mood stabilizer, and my youngest brother is just plain miserable, and won't go to the doctor for it. My older brother and I have tried to convince him that he would benefit from some kink of meds.  He gets into therapy, like it's some kind of bandaid, and leaves the moment he feels better....

My mother had undiagnosed bipolar, father had mild bouts of depression, I think due to his WWII and Korean War experiences, my sister has a form of ADHD, OCD,some depression(she takes no meds as they interfere with her work), a maternal aunt is just plain crazy & not on meds. I have bipolar I (I think), OCD, SAD, anxiety & panic attacks, bouts of paranoia and a variety of other initials LOL

My father has had 2 major episodes of depression which he has recovered from with the help of Remeron.  He has mild OCD issues.  I believe my mother suffers from mental illness as well.  One sister is Bipolar and the other one has severe anxiety and depression.  Her parents were alcoholics.  My pdoc and therapist think she could definitely benefit from getting help.

Dear old dad has been in the VA psych ward more times than I can count.  He faked some symptoms to get a disability, but he has some real problems, and I believe that he has always been psychotic.  My mother had a psychotic break one time where she thought her phone was tapped and she was being monitored by sattelite.  She still has violent mood swings.  My brother has been diagnosed as Bipolar, but doesn't believe he has it.  He's a raging alcoholic and drug addict.  My grandmother and an aunt on my mother's side were both severe alcoholics.  The aunt died from liver failure.  (She was sweet too - I only met her once but I liked her right away.)
As for me, with moderate OCD and a history of SI and suicide attempts (when I was about 5 years younger), I'm probably the most stable one in the bunch! :D

My dad was mani-depressive (back then we just called him a crazy a-hole- no one understood he was ill and needed help).  He was an alcoholic as well.

My brother is bi-polar but I am not sure if he is on meds or not.  He says he is not drinking but I am not certain and I guess it isn't any of my business, anyway!   blush21.gif  He does have a job that he has held for about three years so that is a very good sign.

I am prone towards anxiety and depression and have been on meds consistently for about two years.  I am glad I haven't had to deal with bi-polar (so far) and my mom also was prone towards depression as well as my maternal grandmother.  I hope neither one of my kids ends up like this, although my oldest son is prone towards anxiety and depression, but he is a teen so who knows?  Sloan

My mother is insane.  She's been making me nuts my whole life.  Now that she's going through the change she finally got help.  I wish she would've while I was growing up.  Now I'm reaping the benefits. :(

My father has had depression all his life apparently, but I know it isn't just psychological. Too complicated to go into here.

Hey
My father had a few bad episodes of depression, and a little bit of paranoia when ill to. His sister does as well, now l have been passed the great gene of depression and anxiety, as well as my brother, he may be bi-polar not really sure. But  my sister got away scot free, whats up with that anyway.

Wow.  The results are really something.  I don't know whether to think that mental illness is genetic or that being around mentally ill people makes you mentally ill. Or both.

I feel that mental illnesses are caused by both factors... genetics and environment.  If your parents are messed up, and mistreat you, chances are you will end up messed up.  It's sad, but apparent.

OK, here are the ones I can say for sure:

maternal great-grandfather - depression

maternal grandfather - paranoid schizophrenic

paternal grandmother - don't know for sure what her problem was, but she was loony as could be

aunt - depression

uncle - depression

cousin 1 - bipolar

cousin 2 - anorexia

sister 1 - bipolar

sister 2 - anxiety/panic attacks

Depression runs rampant in my family.

Also, possibly OCD, definitely AD(H)D, definitely anxiety issues.

My oldest brother was anorexic for years.  My maternal grandfather had a nervous breakdown when my mother was young.

My DH is depressive, and his sister self-injures.

My poor son -- he's okay so far (at age 11), but I fear for him!
