PLEASE HELP! I'm a 46 year old female, who just started Remeron a few weeks ago. I've gained ten pounds since then like it was nothing. I've also had thyroid problems in the past, alternating between hypo and hyper. I'M IN A PANIC. shocked.gif Do I dump this medicine now. or will this weight gain stop? If I'm going to gain weight like this, I'll be depressed anyway, so what's the point?!

Hi shunyo - welcomeani.gif to DF!

I'm 47 and was on Remeron for 2 months, during which time I put on 10kg. I am hypothyroid and went in and had my thyroid levels checked at the time, but they were fine. Remeron is sadly known to be a weight-gainer, especially at lower doses. People who swear by it are more likely to be at the 45mg-60mg dosage level, where the weight gain is much less of a factor. So if Remeron is working for you, you could try and bring up this topic with your doctor. And do go and get another thyroid check as it might be contributing.

I said the same thing to the doc: if I am going to put on so much weight, I am only going to become more depressed. It is a very valid point to bring up which your doc should take seriously.

Hi Moonlightress:

Thank you so much for your quick response. I see we have the same issues. I do happen to be getting my thyroid levels checked again this Tuesday. Just want to make sure it isn't that. I think I will talk to my doctor about raising the dose. I do think the medicine is working for me, with no sexual side effects like all the SSRI's. Don't know. I don't exactly walk around with a clown nose all the time anyway! joker.gif I'm so sick of the trial and error periods with these medicines! Wish I could get something that works and stick to it! I don't even think the doctors themselves know alot about these meds.

Take care.
