Im on week 2 of trileptal. Im having a hard time with side effects.I have an appt with my P-doc next week.I have a feeling she will want to try something else.(here we go again) Ok ,Im 5'9 144 lbs.Weight gain is a huge issue for me.I dont have a eating disorder, but have always been pretty obsessed about my weight and get very depressed if I gain weight, So if I tell my Dr that I will not take anything with weight gain as a side effect,How do you think she would react to that?Im scared to bring it up.

I'd have to jump in and tell you that lots of people talk to their dic about their fear of weight gain, so I'd feel comfortable with this tioic.  Remember that these docs hear everything.  Your best bet is to be totally honest with your doc.  It makes your relationship much better.

Never forget, your doc works for YOU. If weight gain is an issue, like it was for me, you flat out tell them. It means youre looking out for your own health too, and being responsible about it as well. I wish I hadnt been so afraid to mention it, i started Zyprexa weighing 187 pounds, and ended up at 250 before I said enough was enough. The weight gain made me alomst suicidal literally, I have never had weight issues like that before and have no plans to live at that weight. I weighed 250 even on July 9th. Its now August something or other, and I am down to 227.no diet, absolutely no exercise, just different medication. Never be afraid of something like that, speak whats on your mind, if he/she is ANY kind of doctor, they will share your concerns, if they dont, there are plenty out there who will respect your concerns.
Wishing you the best in this matter,
James

I have told my doc that before and he has given me something else that doesn't cause weight gain. Actually, there are some ADs that cause weight loss.

I don't believe that you should be concerned or scared to tell your doc. Most docs know that some people are concerned about gaining weight and will accomodate your wishes.

Good luck!

I think a good doctor will be understanding about your weight gain concerns.  I am another one of those people who gained 50 pounds thanks to the meds.  I have managed to lose 30 of those 50 pounds, but I had to make a dramatic change to my eating habits to do so.
Your concerns are definitely valid, so please bring them up with your pdoc.  I hear there are some drugs that are fairly weight neutral.

Thanks everyone,
I talked to my t-doc today and he tells me the same thing. In the past Iv had Doctors get irritated me or tell me "you could use a few pounds." Some family members of mine tell me If you want to feel better than pick your poisen. No! it doesnt have to be that way!

At the risk of being triggered by this thread, I thought I'd pop in anyway :;):

ALWAYS be up front with your doctor!  When I took Zyprexa for three weeks and packed on 25 pounds, I went directly to my doctor without passing "go" and without collecting $200 and told him in no uncertain terms that whether HE thought I needed the weight or not, I was NOT going to stay on that med! no.gif  He took me OFF the med immediately (If not sooner) and then we worked from there... but there was NO WAY I was going to consistently gain that weight (being an anorexic or not) whether it was doing it's job or not... my psyche could NOT handle it, and I knew it.  Some things just HAVE to be considered in the scope of things... For me, if my doctor is not willing to take into consideration that all these things make up my psyche, and my moods... then I most likely need another doctor. nod.gif  That's just how I feel about it.

If you don't fight for you... who will?  I mean really?  It's hard to get your moods stabilized when you're crying your eyes out about your weight every day.... come on... rolleyes.gif  LOL!

Good for you, cat.  You did the right thing.  Don't listen to the people around you... YOU know what's best for YOU!    Way to be your own delegate!

*slinks out of potentially triggering thread*  :;):

wishing you love and laughter,
Cat

Caddon - I'm going demented because of  Zyprexa and weight gain.  You said you lost weight after changing to something else?  could you tell me what you changed to?  If possible the clinical name as well as the brand name - things often have different brandnames here in Australia.  I'm planning to tackle my psych about it and it would help if I had some ammunition as it were.

cheers - Merlin

Well the appointment went ok. I brought up my  concerns.Ill now be adding topamax to my list.Which is fine with me.Im crossing my fingers that this is the one.Shes keeping me on trileptal until we see how the topamax works out. Ill start taking topamax tomorrow morning, which seems strange cuz Iv read here that most take it before bed. Oh well tomorrow should be interesting!
