7 and a half years ago, I overdosed on Ibprofen and went to bed. Woke up in the ICU. I can't remember what happened between those times. Why do you think that is? Would it be because of the medication and/or how tramatic it would've been? I'm confused. How would I know for sure

Telephofee:

Sounds like the meds caused a black out. Some have experienced black outs from drinking too much. Like alcohol, medication, when taken in high dosages, can cause an amnesia-like effect.

It's downright scary not knowing what you did, what went on. I know ''cause I've been there. In my early 20s I regularly drank to the point of blacking out.

As for recalling the night's events...Well, it is possible. The memories are stored in your brain somewhere. It's just that you can't seem to access the file. Sometimes, allowing your mind to slowly work on the problem in your subconscious while you go on with everyday activities can bring a lost memory to the surface. In other words, the harder you think, the less you remember. Allow your mind to pull these memories out on it's own. In time, it may come back to you.

On the other hand, sometimes our brains withhold memories from us as a way to protect us from things that we're still to fragile to handle. Maybe the trauma you suffered that night is more than you can deal with right now and your mind knows this. It may be shielding you from pain and heartache.

Thanks Bean! I don't drink, so I've never blacked out that way, but yeah, it was a weird feeling. Going to bed and waking up in ICU. I soon figured it out and then knew that I was screwed (didn't want anyone to know what I did and figured I could escape or something if the medication took in effect). I don't think I'll ever remember, but who knows? People give different stories. Sometimes I wish I could see the ER and the hospital again to see if it would help, though it's far away from where I am now.

I can't remember what I did yesterday let alone 7 years ago! ;-). My brain is often numb because I'm tired ...... and I can't alter yesterday's events so I try not to dwell.

Medication can cause blackouts. If you were in deep sleep you are unlikely to remember. Why is it bothering you today?

Doesn't bother me too much, but I just wonder sometimes. Had meant to write about it at some point to gain input. I get different responses from different people.
