Has anyone nursed their child while they were on antidepressants? My doctor recently prescribed Prozac for me but he also advised that I stop nursing. Problem is, my son REFUSES anything with a plastic nipple...I know, a lot of people think, "if he gets hungry enough, he'll eat.) And you're probably right, but so far he's held out for the better part of the day when I've tried that. Crying all the while and looking at me heartbroken and confused as to why mommy won't just feed him. So anyway, I've made the decision that rather than create even more stress and upset for myself, that I'm going to take the meds even though I'm still nursing. My children deserve an emotionally functional mommy. So I'm wondering if anyone else has had any experience with this issue....

I took a low dose of Zoloft during and after pregnacy. 50mg once a day.
I too nursed and from what I know zoloft is in the same family as prozac but can be taken while pregnant and nursing.
Talk to your doctor and see if you can find a better solution. Nothing worse then being depressed and having a new baby.

I have been taking the fluoxetine and am doing well. I did a lot of research and reading to learn that it does carry some risks to continue nursing, but because they are in the same drug catagory, and I took Paxil while I was pregnant, I decided that the benefits outweighed the risks and took it. So far I am doing better and my son is doing fine. It's been two weeks to the day.

Hi --First, I'm on 50mg of Zoloft and nursing. Allegedly the 'safest' AD to take while nursing....still doesn't sit well with me.

Second, if you haven't already, I would give the Adiri brand bottle a try. In addition to being BPA and polycarbonate free, it's shaped like no other type of bottle. Perhaps this will be more appealing to your baby. They are widely available online, and I've seen them at Whole Foods and I think Target.

good luck and try your hardest not to give up nursing!!

Sarah
