If you are having difficulty with your weight, you could ask your GP to have a thyroid test done. Also, what are you eating? A high fiber diet (lots of vegetables and little to no meat) is very beneficial with weight issues plus it will lower cholesterol. You may want to ask your pdoc about meds other than Wellbutrin that doesn't cause weight gain. There maybe some othr medications that have this property. Sheepwoman

I eat a very clean diet. Salmon, steamed veggies, yams, etc. I don't eat any junk. I don't have thyroid problems. that is what is so frustrating. I'm doing all the right things but fighting FIGHTING to try and lose these last 10 lb and then just maintain my weight. I don't see why I have to kill myself at the gym just to maintain. I think it's ridiculous. I have tried to research drugs other than Wellbutrin to help with this, but couldn't really come up with anything. this is why I'm asking for ideas that I can bring to my family doctor this week. Thanks.

I don't know of any other med that would help you with your weight. The other possibility is that you have replaced fat with muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat. So you may be at your optimum weight now. See what your GP says. Sheepwoman

QUOTE(JenniferM @ Apr 16 2007, 01:52 PM) I too gained weight on Prozac. * years ago they put me on it and I weighted 118. I took it for 3 years and gained up too 200. I went off the meds and still have not lost the weight. I hate it. That is one reason I am not on anything right now. There is a med you can take that does help with loseing weight but it's hard to get your doc to give them to you. It is called adapex. I took them for awhile and did lose 45 pounds but once I went off the meds I gained it all right back. I too can say i was once a member of the skinny club but no longer can i smile and say any of that. At 5'2 i weighed 135 now have hit the 200;s but sit at about 185. I feel bad for anyone who has gained weight. I lost the one true love of my life by gaining weight and having a problem getting it up due to prozac. This really affects my life, when can we sue. Being 20 and having a limp one sucks since im not asking the doctor for meds. not like i can get laid with all the weight ive gained. 185 doesnt look pretty on a 5'2 frame. I credit all my weight with the reason i am depressed so the way i see it prozac made me depressed. This has nothing to do with prozac but its a story that im sure will make you all feel a little better about yourselfs. I just recently got dumped due to prozac reasons after a 3 yr relationship. Being the desperate person i have now become i asked out a girl who would later reject me for a parapalegic kid in one of my classes. Now this girl was not good looking at all so it was devestating especially since i got the first girlfriend when i was skinny and in shape. She was one hot filipino. But now i gotta settle for getting rolled over by wheels. **** prozac. If anyone has it this bad just share remember can you beat a limp, fat 20 yr old who gets out gamed by kids in wheel chairs.

I started on Paxil about 12 years ago. After awhile I switched to Prozac, and I've been on it pretty continuously ever since. During that time I've gained about 55 pounds. Today I weighed myself and I weigh more than anytime in my life. Which is why I'm here--I was interested in learning if others had experienced such radical weight gain. I recently switched to Wellbutrin because I'd heard it didn't promote weight gain, but it's causing some unpleasant side effects, and I think I'll quit. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who had success losing weight after going off Prozac and how they did it.

Hi Delacroix, I am sorry to hear about your weight gain because of the prozac. I guess the ad's react differently to each body. I know a lot of people who did not gain any weight on Prozac or Lexapro, also Wellbutrin is supposed to give little weight gain. But then there are the side effects which you will have to take in consideration. Have you talked about these questions with your pdoc too? Take care and I do hope you will find the right meds for you with the least side effects. SN
I am sooooooooo sick of killing myself at the gym and watching every single thing I put in my mouth b/c I gain weight so easily from Prozac.
is there ANYTHING out there (medication) that can help with this? BESIDES Wellbutrin. I was on Wellbutrin and am not interested in it anymore (plus the combo didn't help anyway). I don't want some speedy weight loss pill, I am not interested in losing like 20 lb overnight just b/c of some drug. I just want to stop killing myself at the gym/with food. It's exhausting really.
Help please?!
Thanks, spring x00x [/quot
Interesting. I am familiar with your meds but maybe some more info would help. You have been taking Prozac for 8 years at 10 mg per day? Why did you first start taking medication? what is your diagnosis? Why did you start on Wellbutrin? My experience with Prozac has always been well tolerated with minimal side effects. For the most part Prozac has a stimulating effect and usually causes loss of appitite. In all my years of experience in this field I have never encountered a person with a primary side effect of weight gain with prozac,. Some people do react differently to medications. I once took Wellbutrin with Prozac and had a terrible experience with this cocktail. My BP dropped and I almost passed out. I was taking Wellbutrin to help me stop smoking(as it has been known to curb the cravings) It would be interesting to know more about what your looking for in a medication as far as depression or mental health needs. There are so many medications out there that target different neurotransmitters in the brain for different desired outcomes. Another thing, Why only 10 mg? after 6 months to a year the dosage for most people for desired effect is 20-40mg (usually 20mg)

It is interesting indeed how everybody seems to react differently to medication. I am glad prozac has made you loose the weight you put on from using other meds. I do get tired too a lot, but then again I also don't sleep very well at night which might cause my lack of energy too. SN

I first started taking medication because I had a major breakdown, and after starting on Prozac and feeling normal, I realized that I had been depressed all my life. I have been on 20 mg on this time, not just 10 mg. I lowered by dose to 10 mg just to see if I could do it, and just to see if it would make any difference with my weight gain. it didn't. I have been on 10 mg for almost a year now. I am able to be on a very low dose of Prozac mood-wise, but weight wise it makes no difference. So now...............I am completely off Prozac, I tapered for awhile and took my last 10 mg pill one week ago. My plan is to have a 5-week washout period and then switch to Moclobemide. OR I will see how long I can go without being on any medication. It seems that the weight gain with Prozac is quite slow for the first......let's say year. After a year, watch out. In total, I gained about 60 lb from Prozac.
